McDonald’s and Bali linked
2002-12-11
Indonesian police have linked a deadly bombing at a McDonald's restaurant in central Indonesia to the October 12 Bali bombings.
Meanwhile, deputy national police spokesman Brigadier General Edward Aritonang denied earlier remarks by officers on Java that they had arrested the main suspect in last week's bombing at McDonald's in Makassar, Sulawesi island. The explosion killed three people including one of the alleged bombers.
"Was it the red wire first, or the black wire....Boom!"
Aritonang said the man arrested on Wednesday in Java was Abdul Hamid, who is wanted over the Bali bombings, not Agung Hamid, the main suspect in the Makassar blast.
Another Bali bomber bagged, they will be having a high school reunion in the slammer.
In Makassar, police chief Major General Firman Gani said evidence was growing that the two blasts were linked.
It was the first time that Indonesian police have said there was a connection between the attacks. "There are indications that all these happenings (in Makassar) are linked with the Bali bombings ... The main targets (are) American and Australian symbols," he said, without elaborating.
He said police were still hunting three people, including Agung Hamid, over the Makassar blasts. A second bomb exploded the same night at a car dealership, but no one was injured.
Thought they had rushed when they said they weren't linked.
