| Iran's interior minister has announced plans to "decentralise decision-making powers" and shake-up the Islamic republic's unwieldy administrative culture. Abdolvahed Mussavi-Lari was quoted as saying his ministry would soon present to parliament a bill that would provide more say to local officials, who currently have to refer most decisions to Tehran. Where they're examined for all angles for their religious implications... "This law shows the government's willingness to give more powers to local councils, elected local officials and those in charge of the different regions," he said. He did not elaborate on the details of the plan. That implies there aren't any... Local officials in Iran's 28 provinces exercise only limited powers under a cumbersome administrative system inherited from the former imperial regime. That's because the Medes and the Persians learned early on to keep a close eye on the satraps. The current class of rulers is just as jealous of their power... |
