13 dead, 3 arrested in Kashmir
2002-08-23
Three Pakistan-based militants were arrested in Indian-controlled Kashmir on Thursday for allegedly plotting attacks in upcoming state elections, and 13 people were killed in new violence.
"No, no, can't have elections. They'll lend a veneer of legitimacy to Indian rule, after all. Besides, democracy's a Jewish plot. What we need is a khalifate..."
Five snuffies suspected guerrillas and six members of the security forces were killed in separate gunbattles, while militants killed two civilians in other shootouts. Jammu-Kashmir state police chief Ashok Suri said the three arrested men were Islamic guerrillas belonging to the Pakistan-based Al-Badr group. He said the group was planning attacks for state elections expected for September or October. They were arrested in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu-Kashmir. It was the first arrest of Pakistani militants in the state capital in years, since militants are often killed in gunbattles and are rarely captured.
Meaning these guys are more than just cannon fodder...
"There are more Pakistani militants operating in Srinagar with definite plans to disrupt elections," Ashok told a news conference.
