  • An English-born member of the Scottish Parliament has attacked well, verbally, anyway the group who claimed responsibility for toxic packages sent to his assistant and the prime minister's wife, Cherie Blair. Mike Rumbles, a Liberal Democrat member for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine, believes he may have been targeted by the Scottish National Liberation Army (SNLA) because he was born and educated in the North East.

The parcels were recovered after a man claiming to be from the SNLA - whose members have been dubbed the 'tartan terrorists' - made an anonymous phone call to Scotland Yard. Police are trying to trace up to 14 other packages containing the poison, caustic soda, disguised as aromatherapy oil.
Yes, a Telling Blow Against English Imperialism, laddie. Next they're gonna kidnap Patty Hearst and knock over a few banks.
There may be a bit more bite than meets the eye. A quick Google on the SNLA would make them look to have a bit more oomph than the 70s SLA you're quipping about in yellow.

However, they don't have anywhere near the IRA's base and seem to pose no long-term threat to stability. The SNLA does has their own analog to Sinn Fein, the legal Scottish Separatist Group.

'Formed in 1980 in response to "mass English immigration", the group has spent years making hoax bomb threats to blow up Queen Elizabeth and her daughter Princess Anne.'

Notable for picking a fight with the CPGB: 'Donald Anderson of the SRSM was blustering that “if Delargy [a CPGB supporter - MF] wants to jump the hospital queue, then he is sending out the right signals. How else does he think this will be resolved? Does he think we’ll send him a lawyer’s letter?”'

(Vaguely) suspected in the assassination of William McRae.

I see a wannabe IRA/Sinn Fein without the brains - and I never think of the IRA as being very smart. What have I missed?
