Jihadists Now Using Advanced SAMs in Syria, RU SA-8 Gecko
Jihadists in Syria are moving beyond the use of just MANPADS to more advanced SAM weapon systems such as the SA-8 Gecko. Liwa al-Islam released a video on 30 Jul. 2013 showing the shoot down of a jet with what they claim is the Russia Osa SAM system [SA-8 Gecko]. The effective use of advanced weapon systems captured by the jihadists significantly increases the threat picture in Syria where fighters are no longer limited to the Kalashnikov and RPG.
