Ky. man arrested after shooting down $1800 drone hovering over sunbathing daughter
[WASHINGTONTIMES] A Kentucky man shot down an $1800 drone hovering over his sunbathing daughter and was then enjugged
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
and charged with first degree criminal mischief and first degree wanton endangerment.

"My daughter comes in and says, 'Dad, there's a drone out here flying," William H. Merideth, 47, told a local Fox News affiliate reported Tuesday. The Bullitt County father shot at the drone, which crashed in a field near his yard Sunday night.

The owner of the drone claims he was only trying to take pictures of a friend's house, the station reported.

"I went and got my shotgun and I said, 'I'm not going to do anything unless it's directly over my property,'" Mr. Merideth said, noting that the drone briefly disappeared when his daughter waved it off. "Within a minute or so, here it came. It was hovering over top of my property, and I shot it out of the sky. I didn't shoot across the road, I didn't shoot across my neighbor's fences, I shot directly into the air."

Mr. Merideth said four men tried to confront him after the drone was shot out of the sky, but then changed their minds when they saw his personal firearms.

#1  This will only become more common as drones are used more. Anything 500 feet and under is private property and eligible to be shot from the sky.

Sound fair?

#6  Under US law, property owners are required to allow unrestricted airspace access to any vehicle under the jurisdiction of the FAA, the US military, or the US government.

I picked this off the internet. Can't vouch for the legality but it passes a smell test.

I would think anything above my property within shotgun range would be fair game. Especially something with a camera flying over my sunbathing daughter.

#7  If they really were looking at a house, the camera would not have seen Dad protecting his daughter. They would not have known where the AA came from, only heard a single thump. I'm guessing Dad knew what he was doing, in consideration of shooting straight up, and not only needed just one shot but had a selection of which shot would be right.

The range isn't too great if the drone was hovering as reported--it is just about right for a slingshot. I've put these pellets through tin cans with ease at around 20-25 yards.

Badger recovering in shelter after being found drunk on beach
[Dhaka Tribune] A female badger is recovering at a Polish animal shelter, two days after the party animal was found passed out on a beach having had too much to drink.

"Oh, youth. Oh, summer holidays," animal shelter Dzika Ostoja joked on Wednesday in a Facebook post, detailing Wandzia the badger's plight in the Baltic seaside resort town of Rewal.

"We found Wandzia drunk, surrounded by seven [empty beer] bottles. There were two more in the bushes, so it's possible Wandzia began partying there. Haha."

The badger is believed to have stolen the booze from fellow beachgoers, before removing the beer caps with her teeth.

The black and white omnivore was unconscious for two days, the shelter's manager, Marzena Bialowolska, told AFP, adding that the badger had partially recovered but was still unable to sit up.

"She's been sleeping, drinking water and eating chick meat," said Bialowolska. If all goes well, Wandzia will be released back into the wild by the end of the week.

Wandzia is not the first of her kind to have experimented with alcohol. In 2009, German police were called to clear a road of a badger that was "drunk as a skunk" from gorging itself on over-ripe, fermented cherries.

Rolling Stone sued over flawed rape story
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Former fraternity members and graduates from the University of Virginia have sued Rolling Stone magazine over a gang rape story that sparked outrage and eventually had to be retracted, the New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
reported.

The defamation lawsuit came as news emerged that the editor who oversaw the flawed story -- which was retracted after unprecedented criticism and scrutiny of the iconic publication -- was leaving the magazine.

Managing editor Will Dana will leave more than eight months after the story alleging a gang rape on campus was published, the Times also reported Wednesday.

Titled "A Rape on Campus," the story horrified many when it appeared in November with its explosive claims of a violent gang rape at a fraternity house, as recounted by the anonymous victim, identified only as "Jackie."

The story was later redacted and retracted after facts in the article did not check out and a Columbia University investigation found basic journalistic failures during the story's reporting and editing.

Three former members of Phi Kappa Psi, the fraternity from the University of Virginia where Rolling Stone had said the alleged rape took place, filed their lawsuit against the magazine saying the story had a "devastating effect" on them, The New York Times said.

One of the plaintiffs said friends and family members were able to identify him in the story as an accused attacker, the Times reported.

An associate dean from the university also filed a $7.5 million defamation lawsuit in May against Rolling Stone over the article.

Bangladesh
RAB arrests gang of con men
[Dhaka Tribune] Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) raided a fake office in the capital's Badda area and tossed in the calaboose
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
six of its officials for taking money from people by fraud.
Operating inside the beltway? Who knew ?
A team of RAB 1 conducted the drive at the office, located in Reazedel Tower at Pragati Sarani, early yesterday following a tip-off and arrested Nazmul Hasan Himel, 35, Masudur Rahman Sumon, 33, Habibur Rahman Daud, 54, Akbar Sheikh, 38, Amir Hossain, 30, and Shahjahan Miah, 32, said Lt Col Tuhin Mohammad Masud, commanding officer of RAB 1, during a press briefing at RAB 1 Headquarters in Uttara yesterday afternoon.

RAB also recovered fake visiting cards, appointment letters and two cycle of violences during the raid. A number of victims have complained about being conned by them, the RAB official said.

Describing the con artists' modus operandi, he said they would rent a well-decorated office and publish employment advertisements on newspapers. When people responded to the ad and sent in applications, they would invite them for an interview, offer them a job and ask them to give a security deposit.

Once they collected a good amount of money, they would shut down their office and flee. Some time later, they would repeat the routine using different names for themselves as well as their business.

On one such stint, they opened an office named Rexton Electra Industries Limited on the ninth floor of Delta Dalia Tower at Kemal Atartuk Avenue Earlier this year. They published an job circular in newspaper on January 19.

Seeing the circular, one of their victims named Ashraful Haque responded and was invited to an interview, where accused Nazmul Hasan introduced himself as MN Hasan, managing director of Rexton, and offered Ashraf the post of a director.

"Along with the appointment, Ashraf was also asked to deposit Tk1.2 lakh as seciurity," Lt Col Masud said.

Besides Ashraf, they took money from several others and collected Tk23 lakh -- some were promised jobs, while some were promised a share in the company.

After conning a number of people, they collected Tk70-80 lakh and shut down the office in February.

"After receiving several similar complaints, RAB started investigating and found a similar job circular published on June 18. This time, the company was named Confident Electra, located in Badda, with Nazmul posing as company head Saimon Sarkar," the RAB commanding officer said.

Legal action is being taken against the accused, he added.

MOD ready to call out the Army over Calais illegal immigrant swarm.
[Telegraph] The British Armed Forces are set to get involved in the Calais migrant crisis for the first time in order to keep the roads clear ahead of a weekend of chaos, Whitehall sources said.
Does the British military have the manpower for this job? I'm just asking given all the cut-backs...
Military planners are considering opening up barracks to relieve roads in Kent blocked by lorries unable to cross the Channel.

Ministry of Defence land around Folkestone would be used as temporary lorry parks under the proposal, to reduce congestion which has blocked miles of motorway for days.
Who could have predicted the Chunnel would eventually result in such a cock-up? Just about anyone I reckon.

China-Japan-Koreas
North Korea: Sohae Facility Ready to Support Future SLV Launch;

Recent commercial satellite imagery indicates that construction begun in spring 2015 after the earlier modification of the Sohae gantry for space launch vehicles (SLVs) has been completed. It appears that the SLV stages and payload can be prepared horizontally in a new launch support building at the end of the pad, then transferred to a movable support structure that is several stories high, where they will be erected vertically, checked out and finally moved to the launch tower.

Imagery of the Sohae engine test stand also indicates that preparations were underway as of July 21, including the presence of a moveable crane and probable ground support equipment, for an engine test in the near-term. A subsequent unconfirmed Yonhap report on July 24 stated that a test had taken place.

Construction of a shelter covering the Sohae rail spur where SLV stages and associated equipment are delivered from offsite has also been completed. The shelter would prevent the observation of rail activity at this location, and make it more difficult to observe the arrival of missile-related railcars and shipping containers by satellite imagery.

Despite these developments and statements by the ROK Ministry of Defense that Pyongyang is likely to conduct a "strategic provocation" around the time of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea, there are still no indications at Sohae that test preparations are underway to support a long-range SLV launch. There is also no public evidence to suggest that a decision has been made by the leadership in Pyongyang to move forward with a launch.

In the coming weeks, if preparations are indeed underway, we would expect to see other on-the ground indications at Sohae including increased rail activity and the possible arrival of missile related railcars, activity at facilities associated with rocket assembly, the filling of oxidizer and fuel storage tanks associated with the launch pad, activity at range radars intended to track a launch and possibly the arrival of VIPs to observe a launch.

Beer Creates Jobs
h/t Instapundit
The Beer Institute and the National Beer Wholesalers Association issued the report Tuesday during a congressional briefing. It claims that beer companies are responsible for 1.5 percent of the gross domestic product and more than $48.5 billion in taxes.

American brewers and beer importers employ nearly 50,000 workers, according to the report, while distributors employ more than 130,000 workers and suppliers employ more than 380,000 workers.

In all, the industry is responsible for 1.75 million jobs, the report noted.

#1  Cheers - Cliff to Norm:

"Well, ya see, Norm, it's like this...

A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first.

This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members! In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells.

Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine! That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

White House: Planned Parenthood attackers 'extremists on the right'
[CNN] "There's ample reason to think that this is merely the tried and true tactic that we have seen from some extremists on the right to edit this video and selectively release an edited version of the video that grossly distorts the position of the person who is actually speaking on the video," White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said. Odious Ginsburg Calls 'Choice' An Empty Concept For Poor Women
[Huffpoo] WASHINGTON -- Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said the concept of "choice" is an ephemeral one for low-income women who live in states that pass laws limiting access to abortion, as they may not be able to afford to travel to a state with less onerous restrictions.
Sign here and date: ___________________ for travel and per diem reimbursement plus medical research harvesting cash bonus.
The lack of reproductive freedom is a remaining barrier to gender parity, the justice said at a Duke Law event Wednesday evening. Advocacy organizations and groups that fund abortions have pushed the idea that being "pro-choice" includes fighting to end the decades-old Hyde Amendment, which bans federal funds from going toward Medicaid coverage for abortion except in limited circumstances. One in four women on Medicaid who would have abortions if the Hyde Amendment didn't exist instead carry an unwanted pregnancy to term because of the prohibitive cost of the procedure, the Guttmacher Institute notes.

Ginsburg's remarks were all the more salient given that laws further restricting access to abortion in Mississippi and Texas are waiting to be picked up by the Supreme Court.
More "salient" indeed. No need for oral and written arguments, she's likely to have already written her decision.

Follow the money: Article at the Guttmacher Institute link in para two entitled 'Family Planning Centers are a Key Asset for ACA Insurance Plans,' addresses the desired end state of Planned Parenthood and the ACA.

#1  The lack of reproductive freedom is a remaining barrier to gender parity

Au contraire, ending paternity fraud and filing false official papers as in birth certificates, and sticking men with child support that had no DNA contribution to the child would bring gender parity as well. Then again where's the responsibility, accountability, and power in that? Without that little nagging element of 'responsibility' how can it be about true equality?

Killing of Cecil the lion triggers probe by U.S. agency.
[Rooters] The killing of Cecil the lion in Zimbabwe by American dentist and trophy hunter Walter Palmer is being investigated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to see if it was part of a conspiracy to violate U.S. laws against illegal wildlife trading, a source close to the case said.
No, Walt is a very wealthy dentist. He makes a arse-load of money repairing and selling teeth. Cecil was getting on in years. Could we cease the wildlife distractions and spend a bit more time investigating the recent spate of infant body parts trading here at home ?

Former VA Governor and U.S. Army CI Agent now in Presidential Race.
[Breitbart] Hello, I'm Jim Gilmore and today I am announcing my candidacy for the Republican nomination for President of the United States.

With so many candidates already in the race, some may ask, "Why am I running?" That's a fair question that deserves a straight answer.

I am a candidate for president because our current Washington leadership is guiding America on a path to decline, and I can reverse that decline.

That current leadership is damaging our economic and national security to such a degree, that for this first time in American history, most Americans believe their children will not be better off than they are.

I have a vision for a different America, one that will return America to the policies of a dynamic, entrepreneurial free-market economy and a policy of peace-through-strength for our national security.

I have been looking for someone to enter the race committed to my belief that America's economic and national security is increasingly at risk, but I have not seen a response from anyone that makes me certain about their knowledge or solutions to the threats facing our nation.
Gov. Gilmore is a very impressive, well spoken addition.

#1  I have been looking for someone to enter the race committed to my belief that America's economic and national security is increasingly at risk, but I have not seen a response from anyone that makes me certain about their knowledge or solutions to the threats facing our nation.

Nor have I.

#2  I am a candidate for president because our current Washington leadership is guiding America on a path to decline, and I can reverse that decline.

Groovy.

#3  I'd settle for a candidate who would just stop the decline, let along reverse it.

#4  I just want them to get the hell out of my way.

#5  Jim Gilmore basically said in his interview with the Richmond paper that he isn’t the most charismatic candidate and that since he is boring and lacks charisma, people should vote for him.

Oh yeah, by the way, he was a governor during the 9/11 attacks.

He sounds politically naïve to me.

Don’t sell your house Jim.

#6  Might be nice to have a boring president.

#7  I predict the Dems will drop Hillary and go for Joe.
