CNN Commentator: 'We Should Be Strategic in How We Riot'
[The Weekly Standard] "I'm not saying we should see the destruction of black communities as positive. I'm saying that we can't have too narrow a conception of what the destruction of black communities mean," said Hill. "I think we should strategic in how we riot."
The opportunity for advanced education, degrees, and tenure at Moorehouse, along with a fawning media following have established Dr. Hill as a community icon and spokesperson. Now he is an educated, articulate, and 'strategic' thinking bantu Kommunis separatist. How delightful !
Elsewhere in the program, the commenter blamed "state violence and extrajudicial killing" for the violence.

#1  He does have a point though. 'State violence and extrajudicial killing' does lead to anti-state violence and killing, also known as revolution. Inner city black communities are the least of the state's worries on that front - which is why the state is working so hard to nullify the Second Amendment.

Baltimore riot: State of emergency declared, 15 police injured after violence following Freddie Gray funeral
[ABC.NET.AU] A state of emergency has been declared in the US city of Baltimore as protesters clash with police after the funeral of a 25-year-old black man who died a week ago from a spinal injury suffered in police custody.

The riots broke out just a few blocks from the site of Freddie Gray's funeral and then spread through other parts of the city.

At least 15 coppers were maimed, a police front man said, as authorities in riot gear cordoned off streets.

Hundreds of rioters looted businesses and set buildings on fire.

Television images showed a mob of rioters jumping on the top of a police car, after teenaged crowds ignored calls to disperse and clashed with a line of hundreds of police.

Rioters also cut a fire department hose while firefighters fought a fire at a pharmacy looted earlier, Baltimore police said.

Maryland governor Larry Hogan declared state of emergency and has activated the state's national guard over the violence, his office said.

A city-wide curfew has been put in place between 10:00pm and 5:00am for one week starting on Tuesday, Baltimore mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said.

"Too many people have spent generations building up this city for it to be destroyed by thugs," she told a presser.

Mr Gray's death reignited a public outcry over police treatment of African Americans that flared last year after the killings of unarmed black men in Ferguson, Missouri, New York City and elsewhere.

There should be a law about crossing state lines to join a riot. It is one thing for locals to riot and burn their own crap but very much another for others to join in and escallate the problem. I'd like to see some serious jail time for the border-crossing rioters.

Officers Injured, Baltimore Businesses Shut Down Amid Violent Riots
[WASHINGTON.CBSLOCAL] Several officers have been injured as a large riot continues to grow violent Monday afternoon in Baltimore.

Baltimore Police sprayed mace at rioters, but say the group of teenagers is continuing to throw bricks, rocks and other items at officers.

WNEW’s Karen Adams reports police have arrested two people so far. The protests started in the area of Mondawmin Mall have spilled into nearby streets and neighborhoods.

Police says the group has refused to follow orders and the department is continuing to deploy resources into the neighborhoods near the mall.

The Baltimore Police Department said earlier in the day they received a credible threat that numerous gangs have entered into a partnership to “take-out” law enforcement officers.

According to the department, they have received credible information that various gangs including the Black Guerilla Family, Bloods and Crips have entered into the partnership.

“Law enforcement agencies should take appropriate precautions to ensure the safety of their officers,” the department says in a press release.

This threat comes after 25-year-old Freddie Gray was arrested for possessing a switch blade knife April 12 in Baltimore. According to his attorney, Gray died a week later in the hospital from a severe spinal cord injury he received while in police custody.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore closed its downtown campus at 2 p.m. Monday after the police department’s warning. The university posted this statement to its website:

Due to reports from the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) concerning scheduled activities today beginning at 3 p.m., UMB will close today at 2 p.m. at the recommendation of the BPD. These activities may be potentially violent and UMB could be in the path of any violence. The safety of our students and employees is of paramount importance please vacate the campus as soon as possible.

T. Rowe Price in Baltimore is also closing early and gave this statement to WNEW:

We took this step out of an abundance of caution and to honor our commitment to the safety of our associates. Business continuity procedures have been implemented to ensure our operations continue uninterrupted. We expect that many of our associates will continue working remotely for the remainder of the day. We will continue to monitor the situation in consultation with local authorities.

Other businesses in the area including the Mondawmin Mall, Lexington Market, The Avenue Market and Cross Street Market are also closed this afternoon in anticipation of the protests. The Mondawmin Metro station has closed temporarily.

Police say juveniles are throwing rocks at officers in the area of Mondawmin Mall and Liberty Heights. They also warned of traffic delays in the area of Liberty Heights and Reisterstown Road.

A spokesperson for the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore said, “Posting on social media indicates the possibility of student protests in downtown this afternoon. We have no way to confirm whether something will actually happen, but we are paying close attention.”
Dunno where the "student protests" came from. I don't think the Black Guerrilla Family includes many students. I've also heard that they hope to kill some cops tonight.

'It could have been me': Random double murder rattles Metairie
[NOLA] The news that two teens had been arrested in connection to the murder of David Pence and his son, Nicholas, provided small comfort to their neighbors in an upscale Metairie neighborhood, residents said.

Sunday's (April 26) sunny afternoon passed in typical quiet after the announcement by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office that Dexter Allen, 17, and Haraquon Dugrey, 18, were jailed Friday. But behind the stillness, residents were uneasy.

Shortly before midnight Wednesday, police said Allen slipped into the Pence's house armed with a 12-gauge shotgun, and gunned down the father and son in the living room of their one-story brick home, Sheriff Newell Normand said Sunday morning.

David Pence may have been asleep in a chair when he was shot in the neck, chest and leg, Normand said. Nicholas, who had been hanging out with friends in the garage earlier that evening, was found a few feet away, shot in the face and the side of his head.

#1  My neighborhood. Yes, it has folks rattled - quiet, good, old neighborhood (I wouldn't call it 'upscale' though), very little crime. A couple of 'youth' from the city had carjacked a car and saw activity at the house, but by the time they got back to rob them, only the father and grown son were home, so they killed them (I thought the mother was elsewhere in the house though), presumably frustrated at not getting a big enough haul for their effort. (I had first suspected some kind of drug deal but so far, that doesn't seem to have been the case.)

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Watch DARPA's Scary Self-Guided Bullets Swerve to Hit Moving Objects
Bwahaha!
Military researchers at DARPA have been developing ammunition which can change its path in mid-air to ensure it always hits its target. Now, it can even correct itself mid-flight to hit a moving target.

The Department's Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordnance (EXACTO) is a .50 caliber bullet that maneuvers itself as it travels through the air. It's far from clear how it works--"the system combines a maneuverable bullet and a real-time guidance system to track and deliver the projectile to the target," says DARPA--but it's now effective enough to swerve and dive to hit a moving target.

In a video released by DARPA, a trained sniper uses the system to reliably hit a target that starts moving once the shot is taken. But, unnervingly, it also manages to hit the spot when an untrained user of the sniper rifle takes a shot. The Department claims that it'll "improve sniper effectiveness and enhance troop safety by allowing greater shooter standoff range and reduction in target engagement timelines." We just hope it stays firmly in the battlefield, given how effective it is in the hands of the untrained.

#2  From wikipedia'

The DARPA EXACTO program may face competition from Sandia National Laboratories for creating a guided sniper round. The DARPA EXACTO program uses different methods than Sandia's guided round. It relies on remote-guidance tied to the optics, which may be more reliable than Sandia's guidance method of needing to paint the target with a laser for their projectile to follow, which can be detected, diffused, or blocked. EXACTO models on existing .50 BMG ammunition and rifles instead of needing new hardware, which the Sandia guided dart would need. Although EXACTO is specifically focused on military applications, Sandia is seeking to make commercial sales of their guided sniper projectile.

It must use a laser to change the direction of the round inflight.

Here's The Most Expensive Weapons System Ever (f-35) And All Of Its Ammunition In One Photo
Earlier this month the US Air Force told Reuters that America's most expensive weapons system ever built is on track for "initial combat use" by September 2016.

Designed and manufactured at Lockheed Martin's massive production facility in Fort Worth, Texas, the F-35 Lightning II can carry an impressive 18,000 pounds of lethal ammunition.

Lockheed's F-35 program includes three variant aircrafts (the F-35A, F-35B, and F-35C), each designed to meet the specific needs of America's sister service branches and a number of foreign military buyers like the United Kingdom, Australia, Netherlands, Norway, Japan, South Korea, and Israel.

Lockheed says that each F-35A jet, also referred to as the Conventional Takeoff and Landing (CTOL), costs $103 million (not including engine) and is the most requested of the three aircrafts. Thus far, approximately 65 of the anticipated 1,763 F-35A jets have been delivered to the Department of Defense.

The F-35's carry a similar arsenal except that the F-35A is the only variant to feature an internal cannon, which is located on the left side of the jet between the cockpit and wing.

US lowers fluoride levels in drinking water for first time in over 50 years
[THEGUARDIAN] The government is lowering the recommended amount of fluoride added to drinking water for the first time in more than 50 years.
John Birch is pleased.
Some people are getting too much fluoride because it is also now put in toothpaste, mouthwash and other products, health officials said Monday in announcing the change.

#4  There is zero evidence that systemic fluoride prevents cavities. #6  Great news but not broad enough in my opinion. Fluoride is actually toxic--read the labels on your mouthwash: Do not swallow. It will displace iodine in the thyroid, leading to hypothyroidism, and is another endocrine disruptor. It is also linked in studies to autism, and is found in some vaccines. What child doesn't get fluoride treatments? We get excess from our tap water, pharmaceuticals, pools, baked goods, etc. so if we can't avoid it, we can try to detox.
Fluoride isn’t really a free radical or a heavy metal, though, and therefore is somewhat immune to both of these modes of detoxification. Instead, it’s referred to as a halide, and it becomes sequestered in the body by binding to iodine receptors. This is bad for two reasons: fluoride essentially hides out in iodine receptors (which is a large part of why most detox practices aren’t sufficient to get rid of it), and it displaces iodine in the process, which leads to thyroid dysfunction and other symptoms of iodine deficiency. Thinning eyebrows, hairloss, acne, inability to lose weight, fatigue are a few early signs but it can cause retardation and lead to other disorders, like diabetes and cancer. Fluoride is an unrecognized health menace, along with glyphosphate in our food supply.

#9  My dear Thor Lumumba3940, as it happens, I spent a few years during my varied working life developing new and improved toothpastes for one of our major toothpaste manufacturers.

You are quite right that fluoride ingested in quantity is dangerous. As an aside, it must be noted that all chemicals ingested in quantity are dangerous, including water.* In fact, the purer the water, the more dangerous it is.

Fortunately, the toothpaste chemists did something rather clever about it. Knowing that the flavours used in toothpastes cause vomiting if ingested in quantity, they carefully chose flavors and flavour levels that would induce vomiting long before a dangerous amount of fluoride could be ingested. This is conclusively demonstrated periodically when someone's unsupervised child eats a quarter tube of the stuff before vomiting it all back up along with the entire contents of its stomach, much to the parent's distress. The parent then, in a legitimate panic, calls poison control, a doctor, shows up at the emergency room, or calls the manufacturer to discover what can be done. Each incident must be reported to the Food and Drug Administration, along with the outcome, so we have a fairly complete record of all such incidents going back to the 1950s, when fluoridated toothpastes first appeared.

Ditto for fluoridated mouthwashes, as well.

As for your question, what child doesn't get fluoride treatments? The answer is, poor children mostly. In fact, rotting teeth in children is a marker of poverty or neglect in this country. In Germany, though, I saw it in middle class children who constantly drank fruit juice, their parents taking the attitude that baby teeth were only going to be replaced by adult teeth anyway, so why waste the money on pediatric dentistry.

* A wonderful site on the dangers of water, including Material Safety Data Sheets, can be seen here. And for comparison, there's this on the dangers of tomatoes, which knowledge had a salutary effect on my behaviour as a child.

#10  Incidentally, the CDC considers fluoridation of drinking water to be one of the top ten public health achievements of the twentieth century:

Fluoridation of drinking water began in 1945 and in 1999 reaches an estimated 144 million persons in the United States. Fluoridation safely and inexpensively benefits both children and adults by effectively preventing tooth decay, regardless of socioeconomic status or access to care. [emphasis mine. -- tw] Fluoridation has played an important role in the reductions in tooth decay (40%-70% in children) and of tooth loss in adults (40%-60%) (5).

I don't know about the rest of Europe, but in Germany when we lived there in the 1990s nobody drank tap water, which was commonly believed to be unsafe. Rather, they drank bottled water from a variety of sources, none of them, as far as I was aware being fluoridated. Those parents who cared about such things paid for prescription fluoride drops from the pediatrician.

#12  I can't speak to most of the claims around fluoride made in #6, Besoeker. This is the first I've heard about a connection between fluoride and autism, for instance, though it seems to me that if that were a serious risk factor, autism rates would have grown substantially in the years following the introduction of fluoridated water, instead of remaining steady until the definitions were broadened in recent years.

Putin Has 'No Regrets' over Crimea Annexation
[ALMANAR.LB] Russian President Vladimir Putin

Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
said he has no regrets over Moscow's 2014 annexation of Crimea as it overturned "a historical injustice."

"I think we did the right thing and I don't regret a thing," Putin said of his decision to take back the Black Sea peninsula from Ukraine, during the interview in a state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
documentary.Russian President Vladimir Putin

"When we defend our (interests), we go to the end," he said in the interview broadcast Sunday to mark 15 years in power.

Explaining the motivation behind Crimea's takeover, Putin said it was righting a historic wrong after Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev transferred the peninsula from Russia to Ukraine in 1954, then only a symbolic move since both were in the USSR.

Russia's annexation of Crimea- following a national referendum- and subsequent charges that it is supporting pro-Moscow separatists in eastern Ukraine have plunged relations with the West to Cold War-era lows.

Putin, who served as president from 2000-2008 then spent four years as prime minister before resuming the top job in 2012, accused the United States of directly contacting and providing logistical support to North Caucasus separatist Lion of Islams.

In the documentary "President," on Rossiya 1 television, Putin cited intelligence from Russian special services that there "were simply direct contacts between fighters from the North Caucasus and representatives of US special forces in Azerbaijan."

Three Russian ladies jailed for twerking near WW2 memorial
[RFE/RL] Three young Russian ladies were handed brief jail sentences for making a music video that shows them twerking near a World War II memorial.
It doesn't sound like they were actually "ladies."
A district court in the Black Sea coastal city of Novorossiisk found five ladies guilty of hooliganism. It sentenced one of them, a teenager, to 15 days in jail and two in their 20s to 10-day terms. Two others received fines after the court ruled they had health issues that prevented them from being jailed.

The hearing took place nearly two weeks after an investigation into a popular video showing a group of six ladies twerking next to the memorial. Prosecutors said the "erotic and sexual twerk dance" was disrespectful to the memory of those who fought in World War II.

US Defense Commitment to Japan 'Ironclad', Includes Senkakus: Kerry
[ALMANAR.LB] The US commitment to the defense of Japan is "ironclad," top US diplomat John Kerry vowed Monday as the two allies broadened their military cooperation revising their rules for the first time since 1997.

And amid tensions with China in the South and East China Seas, Kerry said the US commitment "covered all territories" administered by Japan "including the Senkaku islands."

The Great Wall Of Sand
While the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam and the U.S. dither, mount legal challenges and complain, China is building in the Spratly Islands. The photographs are quite interesting; China is moving a lot of sand to create a number of what look (to my eye) to be military facilities, including an airfield.

By the way, where's Greenpeace on this? Shouldn't they be all outraged about the destruction of natural habitat?
The Outer Banks and various sand dunes here and there are forever at risk of washing away, we are warned. How stable are those sand islands China is building? What say you, O Rantburg engineers?
From the photos, these bases have sand berms about four feet high protecting them from the South China Sea. They look like typhoon-bait to me...

Australian sports presenter sacked for ANZAC tweets
[AA.TR] A sports presenter has been sacked after refusing to take down a series of tweets about ANZAC Day described as deeply "offensive" by Australia's communications minister.
Oh lord -- not another sportscaster with delusions of profundity.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported that SBS presenter Scott McIntyre had referred to Australians marking the day as "poorly-read, largely white, nationalist drinkers and gamblers."
Scotty is white as Wonder Bread, confused on facts and ideas, which makes him poorly read. It's his bad luck to be against drinkin', gamblin', and other forms of sin.
"Remembering the summary execution, widespread rape and theft committed by these 'brave' Anzacs in Egypt, Paleostine and Japan," he added.
That's not what pops to mind for me when I think of ANZACs. I think of them more in terms like "competent" and "well-disciplined." I ran into an NZ once who was a nasty bastard, but he stands out precisely because there were so few like him.
"Not forgetting that the largest single-day terrorist attacks in history were committed by this nation & their allies in Hiroshima & Nagasaki."
Why, yes... Now that you mention it, I recall the day the Aussie bombers lifted off on their deadly mission... Oh. Wait. It wasn't them.
On Monday, the director of sport at McIntyre's employer SBS said that he had been sacked for disobeying an order to delete the posts, which had been openly criticized by Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
Not for the content, but for his refusal to take down something that reflected poorly on his employer.
Turnbull tweeted it was "Difficult to think of more offensive or inappropriate comments."
That sort of horrible political "thought" is increasingly common in this country. The left makes no secret of the fact that they hate us.
McIntryre's comments to his 30,000 followers were "'despicable' and deserve to be condemned," he added.

On Sunday, SBS managing director Michael Ebeid and director of sport Ken Shipp said in a statement that SBS had taken the decisive action to terminate McIntyre's position "with immediate effect."

It added that the channel supported "our Anzacs" and has devoted unprecedented resources to cover the 100th anniversary of landings at Canakkale in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, many of whom fought in the 1915 Battle of Canakkale -- known as Gallipoli in Australia.

The ANZAC legend is central to the Australian identity.

Europe
Finnish military fires 'sub-caliber' depth charges at suspected submarine
[Rooters] The Finnish military fired on Tuesday handheld underwater depth charges as a warning against a suspected submarine in waters near Helsinki, an incident that comes amid growing military tensions with neighboring Russia.

The navy said it noticed an underwater target on Monday and again on Tuesday morning and fired some warning charges - the size of grenades.

Finland, which shares an 833 mile (1,340 km) border with Russia, has been increasingly worried about its powerful neighbor after a year of Russian air force sorties and military border exercises.

Defense minister Carl Haglund did not say whether Russia was involved. He told Finnish media that the target could have been a submarine, and that it has likely left the area, adding that Finland has rarely used such warning charges.

"We strongly suspect that there has been underwater activity that does not belong there. Of course it is always serious if our territorial waters have been violated," Haglund told Finnish news agency STT.

"The bombs are not intended to damage the target, the purpose is to let the target know that it has been noticed," Commodore Olavi Jantunen told Helsingin Sanomat newspaper.

Reports of a submarine spotted off Stockholm last year led to Sweden's biggest mobilization since the Cold War.

Regional tensions were reflected earlier in April after an unprecedented hawkish joint statement by Nordic countries - Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Iceland - that directly cited the Russian "challenge" as grounds to increase defense cooperation.

Moscow retorted immediately, saying moves by Finland and Sweden towards closer ties with NATO were of "special concern".

Greece moves to sideline Varoufakis after reform talks fiasco
[IN.REUTERS] Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Monday reshuffled his team handling talks with European and IMF lenders, a move widely seen as an effort to relegate embattled Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis to a less active role in negotiations.

An anti-austerity economist who has angered peers with his brash style, Varoufakis is facing calls to quit after returning from a meeting of euro zone finance ministers in Riga isolated and empty-handed while Athens scrambles to avoid bankruptcy.

Tsipras and senior aides publicly voiced support for Varoufakis at a meeting on Sunday and agreed the finance minister would supervise a new team negotiating a reforms deal with lenders, a government official said.

SUP call to separate religion from state

Press Club.

The moot organised by the Sindh United Party (SUP) to mark the 20th death anniversary of the prominent nationalist leader called for bringing an end to the so-called controlled democracy and underlined the need for holding free and fair elections to introduce a transparent political system in the country and enable true public representatives to make laws at the national and provincial legislatures for resolving issues of the common man.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel Will Strike Iran First To Thwart Nuclear Attack
[Breitbart London] Israel is not in a pleasant situation. Every day, her arch enemy Iran draws closer to refining enough uranium to build 100s of nuclear weapons.

Every day the Iranian program becomes more difficult to dislodge -- as the uranium is concentrated, the number of centrifuges required to complete the process decreases, allowing the remaining refining operation to be moved to smaller and more covert facilities.

America, ostensibly Israel's ally, is rumoured to have ordered US warships to shoot down Israeli aircraft, should a strike on Iran appear to be in progress. According to Israeli newspapers, President Obama thwarted a planned 2014 Israeli attack against Iranian nuclear facilities, by threatening to shoot down the Israeli bombers.

America is currently sending additional warships to the Persian Gulf -- ostensibly to blockade Iranian supply runs to rebels in Yemen, but if rumours of President Obama's threat against Israel are correct, perhaps also to reinforce US firepower, should Israel decide to mount an attack against Iran.
Might enjoy a higher degree of success if the operation is launched prior to Russian S-300's being made fully operational.
