U.S. Air Force test pilot Maj. Michael J. Adams was killed during X-15 Flight 191 on Nov. 15, 1967
[TheAviationist] Here’s the story of that last mission:

On 15 November 1967, Ship #3 was launched over Delamar Lake, Nevada with Maj. Michael J. Adams at the controls. The vehicle soon reached a speed of Mach 5.2, and a peak altitude of 266,000 feet.

During the climb, an electrical disturbance degraded the aircraft’s controllability. Ship #3 began a slow drift in heading, which soon became a spin. Adams radioed that the X-15 "seems squirrelly" and then said "I’m in a spin."

Through some combination of pilot technique and basic aerodynamic stability, Adams recovered from the spin and entered an inverted Mach 4.7 dive. As the X-15 plummeted into the increasingly thicker atmosphere, the Honeywell adaptive flight control system caused the vehicle to begin oscillating. As the pitching motion increased, aerodynamic forces finally broke the aircraft into several major pieces.

Adams was killed when the forward fuselage impacted the desert. This was the only fatal accident during the entire X-15 program. The canopy from Ship #3, recovered during the original search in 1967, is displayed at the San Diego Aerospace Museum, San Diego, California.

Parts of the crashed X-15-3, serial number 56-6672, recovered in 1992 by Peter Merlin and Tony Moore (The X-Hunters) are on display at the Air Force Flight Test Center Museum at Edwards.

Zimbabwe: Mugabe At Graduation Ceremony, Moyo Missing
[All Africa] President Bob Muggsy Mugabe
Nonagenarian President-for-Life of Zim-bob-we who turned the former Breadbasket of Africa into the African Basket Case...
was Friday officiating at the Zim-bob-we Open University graduation ceremony in Harare despite reportedly being under house arrest.

Missing from the event however, was higher education minister Jonathan Moyo who is usually by the president's side at such events.

In place of Moyo, who is believed to be one of the officials wanted by the military, was deputy higher education minister Godfrey Gandawa.

Also present at the event were the minister of state for Harare province Miriam Chikukwa, cyber security minister Patrick Chinamasa and counterpart Mike Bimha.

Could Mnangagwa be Zimbabwe's comeback crocodile?
[Al Jazeera] Besieged President Bob Muggsy Mugabe
Nonagenarian President-for-Life of Zim-bob-we who turned the former Breadbasket of Africa into the African Basket Case...
has refused to step down
...Hell no! The money's too good!...
, amid mounting pressure from the army on the former guerrilla to allow a smooth and bloodless transition.

The military demands seek to reinstate former Vice President Emerson Mnangagwa as first vice president and then as leader of a transitional administration.

According to an army statement broadcast on Zim-bob-we state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
on Friday, "significant progress" has been made in mediation talks aimed at ending Mugabe's military house arrest.

Mugabe is still resistant to demands to resign, but increasing internal calls from war veterans and the army could see Mugabe bringing Mnangagwa back into the fold and a possible end to the temporary takeover.

Mass Harare rally planned as pressure mounts on Mugabe
[Al Jazeera] Pressure is mounting on Bob Muggsy Mugabe
Nonagenarian President-for-Life of Zim-bob-we who turned the former Breadbasket of Africa into the African Basket Case...
to step down as Zim-bob-we's president, as efforts to force the veteran leader to resign after nearly four decades in office gain traction.

Zim-bob-we has been in political turmoil since the early hours of Wednesday, when the country's armed forces seized power and placed Mugabe under house arrest.

The embattled 93-year-old leader so far appears resistant to demands to step down. However,
some men learn by reading. A few learn by observation. The rest have to pee on the electric fence for themselves...
he is increasingly running out of options as even some of his closest allies, including brass hats within his ruling ZANU-PF party, look determined to remove him from power.

Issuing a "stark warning", Zim-bob-we's influential war veterans on Friday said Mugabe, the patron of their 35,000-strong association, should not be allowed to stay any longer in power.

Venezuela opposition leader Ledezma flees to Spain
Veteran Venezuelan opposition leader Antonio Ledezma, under house arrest since 2015 for alleged coup plotting, escaped across the border to Colombia on Friday and later flew to Spain.

With a 2018 presidential election looming, an array of major Venezuelan opposition figures are now in exile, detention or are barred from holding office.

They say Maduro has turned Venezuela into a dictatorship, while the government accuses them of joining forces with a U.S.-led global plot to topple him.

Ledezma, the best-known detained opponent of leftist President Nicolas Maduro after Leopoldo Lopez, had spearheaded street protests against Maduro in 2014 that led to months of violence and 43 deaths.

"In Spain today I feel free," he said at Madrid's Barajas airport, where he arrived in the early hours of Saturday. He was cheered by a small crowd including his wife and two daughters, who were already in Spain. Supporters chanted the Venezuelan anthem.

"Let's not permit that Venezuela dies in our hands," he also said, adding that he would soon meet with Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

The 62-year-old former Caracas metropolitan mayor said he had gone past 29 police and army controls during a clandestine, overland journey that he kept secret from his loved ones.

Trump Tells Hillary To 'Get On With Your Life'
If only she would heed this advice...
[Yahoo] President Trump on Saturday returned to attacking his favorite target: Hillary Clinton, the election foe he vanquished more than a year ago.

"Crooked Hillary Clinton is the worst (and biggest) loser of all time," the commander in chief tweeted.

Trump continued: "She just can’t stop, which is so good for the Republican Party. Hillary, get on with your life and give it another try in three years!"

Insulted Erdogan pulls Turkish troops out of NATO exercise
[IsraelTimes] NATO chief apologizes after The Sick Man of Europe Turkey's current president, and its founding leader Ataturk, were depicted as 'enemies' in drill.

NATO

’s secretary-general apologized to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

on Friday over military exercises in Norway during which Turkey’s founding leader, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, and current president, Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First

, were reportedly depicted as "enemies."

Erdogan said Turkey withdrew 40 of its soldiers participating in the drills at NATO’s Joint Warfare Centre in Stavanger, Norway, in protest of the incident and slammed the alliance.

He said Turkey’s top general Hulusi Akar and EU Affairs Minister Omer Celik ‐ who were on their way to a NATO conference in Halifax, Canada ‐ had informed him of the incident.

"They said ’this has happened... and we are going to take out our 40 soldiers’. And I said ’absolutely, don’t hesitate, take them out right now'" Erdogan said.

"There can be no such unity, no such alliance," he said in an address to his ruling party’s provincial leaders, speaking in front of giant pictures of himself and Ataturk, who founded modern Turkey out of the ruins of the Ottoman Empire in 1923.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg issued a statement saying: "I apologize for the offense caused."

He said the incident was the result of an "individual’s actions" and didn’t reflect the views of the alliance.

The individual, described as a civilian contractor seconded by Norway and not a NATO employee, was removed from the exercise and an investigation was underway, Stoltenberg said.

"It will be for the Norwegian authorities to decide on any disciplinary action," Stoltenberg added. "Turkey is a valued NATO ally, which makes important contributions to allied security."

Erdogan said Ataturk’s picture and his own name were featured on an "enemy chart" during the drills.

The Joint Warfare Centre is a multi-national NATO unit based in Stavanger, 300 kilometers (186 miles) southwest of Oslo. It is currently led by Maj. Gen. Andrzej Reudowicz of Poland. According to its website, it has a staff of 250 made up of civilians from 11 NATO member states, including Turkey.

In March, the Norwegian government caused fury in Turkey by granting political asylum to five Ottoman Turkish officers based in Norway who had refused to return home after the failed July 2016 coup attempt in Turkey. The five officers said that they feared being enjugged
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
and tortured in Turkey.

The Trident Javelin exercise in Stavanger is described on a NATO website as a "computer assisted exercise without troops on the ground", aimed at improving command structures for big operations.

The decision by Ankara, a NATO member since 1952, to buy the S-400 air defense system from Russia caused concern among its Western allies, but Turkey remains an important and active member of the alliance.

New footage shows nurses laughing as WWII veteran gasps, dies in hospital bed
World War II veteran James Dempsey can be seen in video footage gasping for air while nurses fail to provide proper care.

NBC affiliate 11 Alive conducted an investigation revealing the true story about what happened to a World War II veteran who died after calling for help in a hospital bed and gasping for air.

Hidden video of the nursing home room shows 89-year-old World War II veteran James Dempsey calling out for help six times while lying in a hospital bed and gasping for air at the Northeast Atlanta Health and Rehabilitation in 2014. The video was only recently released due to a lawsuit filed by the family.

Attorneys attempted to prevent the video from being released by asking a county judge to keep it secret. However, the judge ruled in favor of its release.

There are six hours of video court deposition from a nursing supervisor describing the staff’s response to the incident. These answers were provided before she knew of the existence of the hidden camera. However, the video shows a different story than what the supervisor described.

According to 11 Alive, staff found Dempsey unconscious at 5:28 a.m. but did not call 911 until 6:25 a.m.

Former nursing supervisor Wanda Nuckles said in the deposition that she immediately and continually gave CPR to Dempsey from the time she entered the hospital room. However, after watching the hidden video footage ‐ which shows her not administering CPR at all ‐ her story changes.

Another nurse came into the room, but failed to check any of Dempsey’s vital signs, 11 Alive reported. When nurses couldn’t get Dempsey’s oxygen machine operational, the nurses and Nuckles laughed.

11 Alive reported that it took 10 months for the nursing home to fire the nurses after being provided the video in November 2015. Nuckles and another nurse in the video surrendered their licenses in September.

Despite having a one-star rating on Medicare, the nursing home is still operational in Atlanta.

#3  imo, this is not a nurse "thing." It is a management "thing."

Some organizations seem to attract credentialled, yet unempathetic, employees. If care centers could clear it with the EEOC, they could threshhold using some type of empathy test.
