Brett Kavanaugh's Lawyer Beth Wilkinson Has Worked On Highly Controversial Cases Before
Judge Kavanaugh is not rolling over and playing dead. Wilkinson reportedly specializes in defimation lawsuits.
[Bustle] According to CNN, President Trump's latest Supreme Court nominee has hired an attorney to help him navigate his confirmation hearings following an allegation of sexual assault. Brett Kavanaugh's lawyer Beth Wilkinson is a notable hire ‐ and not just because she's married to former Meet The Press anchor David Gregory.

Kavanaugh, who Trump tapped to replace former Justice Anthony Kennedy, has been accused of sexually assaulting Dr. Christine Blasey Ford when the two were teenagers. Kavanaugh, who categorically denies the allegation, reportedly hired Wilkinson shortly after Ford went public with her claims.

A former Army captain and graduate of Princeton and the University of Virginia, Wilkinson had a lengthy career in government before working in the private sector. She's served as Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of New York, counsel to the Deputy Attorney General, and Principal Deputy of the Terrorism and Violent Crime Section, according to her official biography.

Wilkinson has made a name for herself in numerous high-profile cases. As one of the prosecutors in the trial of Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh, Wilkinson successfully argued for McVeigh's execution, describing him as a "traitor [who] deserves to die." As her biography notes, she was also appointed Special Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of Florida to aid in the prosecution of former Panamanian military leader Manuel Noriega. After leaving the public sector, Wilkinson became a founding partner of the Washington D.C. firm Wilkinson Walsh Eskovitz, where she is now.

#4  Why hire her? For many of the same reasons Cheryl Mills, Jake Sullivan, Phillipe Reines and Heather Samuelson used her to put a legal wall around Hillary regarding her emails:

They’ve hired her because she knows everyone in main Justice,” said Joseph diGenova, a former U.S. attorney-turned-right-leaning legal commentator. “She has very good personal relationships with all the political and career people in the Justice Department, so that’s very smart on their part.” Politico story. She is a well-connected establishment attorney.

#6  Mainly, because Gloria Allred has become associated with hit job cases where she tries to take down conservatives running for office--at least that's my perception.

Wilkerson seems to have a reputation for working both sides of the fence.

Lawyers tend to like to hire experts who have credentials of working for both defendants as well as plaintiffs. They think it makes their expert come across as honest and not just a hatchet man for one side. The same is often true with hiring lawyers.

Cameroon soldiers kills at least seven suspected separatists in Bui
[JOURNALDUCAMEROUN] At least seven suspected separatists were killed on Saturday by soldiers in Kitiwum, Mbiame in Bui Division of the North West Region, the Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
army has said.
The army said a raid launched in the early hours of the morning in their neighbouhood before killing the suspected gunnies.

Locals have since dismissed the notion that the boys killed were gunnies and confirmed they were suspected because of their dressing.

There has been outrage after one of the young men was picture alive with his hands tied before another picture emerged showing he had allegedly been summarily executed on the spot.

The incident has since scared locals who have all gone indoors as fear has gripped the locality while soldiers are reportedly carrying out raids to track down suspected gunnies in the area.

US won’t succeed in overthrowing Venezuelan government: Writer
[PRESSTV] The United States is following a policy of intervention and regime change in Venezuela but it will not succeed in overthrowing the government there, an American writer and academic says.

James Petras, a retired professor who has published on political issues with particular focus on Latin America, the Middle East and imperialism, made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Saturday.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said Washington is preparing a "series of actions" in the coming days to increase pressure on the Venezuelan government.

"You’ll see in the coming days a series of actions that continue to increase the pressure level against the Venezuelan supremoship folks, who are working directly against the best interest of the Venezuelan people," Pompeo told Fox News on Friday.

"We’re determined to ensure that the Venezuelan people get their say," he added.

The top US diplomat did not give further details on the nature of the planned actions.

"Well, it’s been an old story. It’s nothing new. The US had been involved in a coup against Venezuela in 2002. It has encouraged other interventions on the part of the extreme right," Professor Petras said.

"It has been involved in imposing sanctions on Venezuela, similar policy that is taken against the government in Iran, the pressures that it is putting on Russia and China," he added.

"So I think the idea Pompeo doing something new is not in the cards. I think he’s actually following a policy of intervention and regime change, for many years," he noted.

"I think the latest we know is that the US met with the military in Venezuela and tried to urge them to seize power. And I think this is part of Washington’s strategy throughout the world. And I think Venezuela has up to now been effective in resisting the US," the analyst said.

"And I am dubious that Washington would be able to carry through on its policies of squeezing and overthrowing governments," he concluded.

4 Russian reconnaissance planes spotted north of Alaska
Those Russians have been getting frisky in recent days. Yesterday they were teasing the Brits.
[AlMasdar] The U.S. and Canadian military forces detected at least four Russian reconnaissance planes north of Alaska, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said on Saturday.

The NORAD report said that "two groups of Russian maritime reconnaissance aircraft" had entered the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone on September 21 before leaving the area.

"The Russian aircraft remained in international airspace North of Alaska and at no time did the aircraft enter sovereign United States or Canadian airspace," the statement added.

NORAD did not provide anymore details regarding the 4 Russian reconnaissance planes.

Trump administration plans to deny green cards to immigrants receiving benefits
[Independent] The Trump administration has proposed a new rule denying visas and green cards to legal immigrants who are likely to claim government benefits such as food stamps or housing vouchers.

The move could force millions of low-income immigrants to choose between vital support and their hopes of US residency, advocacy groups have warned.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on Saturday the planned change would allow officials to disqualify immigrants’ applications based on receipt of federal assistance such as food stamps, Section 8 housing vouchers or Medicare and Medicaid drug subsidies.

Such benefits would be considered "a heavily weighed negative factor" in granting green cards for permanent residency or in issuing visas for temporary stays.

Ben & Jerry's Founders Creating Democrat-Inspired Ice Cream Flavors to 'Take Back Congress'
[FoxNews] The duo behind Ben & Jerry's ice cream is hoping to "take back Congress" by creating Democrat-inspired flavors.

Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield are teaming up with social justice organization MoveOn to create a contest to support seven progressive candidates ahead of the midterm elections.

In a press release posted to MoveOn's website, the pair said, "We need a Democratic majority to check President Trump's unrestrained power."

The contest will consist of coming up with flavors and flavor names inspired by Democratic House challengers Jess King, Lauren Underwood, Aftab Pureval, J.D Scholten, Ammar Campa Najjar, Stephany Rose Spaulding and James Thompson.

It was also noted in the press release that the contest was not associated with Cohen and Greenfield's company, just them as individuals.

Yo, internet! We need ur help to come up with 7 amazing flavors for 7 amazing up & coming progressives who could be headed to Congress in Nov. To sweeten the deal, Jerry & I will personally make a small batch of each of the winning flavors @MoveOn https://t.co/Gvn876rtTA

‐ Ben Cohen (@YoBenCohen) September 21, 2018

"We also need to send progressive champions to Congress who will fix our health care system with Medicare for All, protect clean air and water, and get big money out of politics," they also said.

A consultant working with Cohen and Greenfield said that the men chose the candidates by focusing on "long shots, up-and-comers and candidates who might not be given a chance by institutional actors."

The seven flavors will not be for sale. Instead, limited batches of each candidate's flavor will be created, then raffled off to supporters, Politico reported. MoveOn will also reportedly contribute fundraising pitches for each of the candidates.

In 2016, Cohen created "Bernie's Yearning" in honor of the then-presidential candidate from his home state of Vermont, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I). The flavor was limited to only 40 pints, and more than half were donated to Sanders' campaign that year.

I can think of a few democrat themed flavors, Starting with "ca-ca", "Extract of bulls***", etc..

PA expels 20 families from clan in Yatta after deadly gun battle
For your Sunday pondering, dear Reader, yet another reason why Israeli Arabs prefer to stay under Jewish rule rather than be traded to the Palestinian Territories as part of the peace treaty President Abbas keeps demanding:
[Jpost] Traditional law and forms of justice still hold sway in many Palestinian communities.
Abu Baxters vs Al-Rojos
Twenty families from a large Paleostinian clan in the southern West Bank city of Yatta were expelled after the Paleostinian Authority and local mediators approved a form of traditional justice. The mediation resulted in the families being exiled to a community near Jenin, with many on social media condemning the result as an injustice.

On September 8, a Paleostinian man was killed and three were maimed, including a young woman, during a shootout in Yatta. Twenty five year old Taher Ahmed Khalil Shannaran was slain, according to police front man Louay Arzikat.

Michael Moore's 'Fahrenheit 11/9' Film Falls Flat At The Box Office
Cue the picture of Nelson Muntz going 'Ha-Ha!"
We don’t seem to have that one, so I’ve given you another.

— trailing wife at 12:30 p.m. EDT
[Hollywood Reporter] - The news isn't good for a trio of high-profile fall festival films opening nationwide box office ‐ Michael Moore's new doc Fahrenheit 11/9, the edgy teen black comedy Assassination Nation and Dan Fogelman's Life Itself, according to early returns.
...
Moore's satirical, anti-Trump film marks the first release from Tom Ortenberg's new company, Briarcliff. (Ortenberg worked with Moore on Fahrenheit 9/11 while stationed at Lionsgate.) It earned just north of $1 million on Friday.

In 2004, Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 debuted to a record-breaking $23.9 million from 868 locations. Otherwise, his films, similar to other political or specialized docs, have launched first in select theaters before expanding their footprint in order to capitalize on word of mouth.
Translation - those other films of his sucked big hairy donkey balls.

#1  ...The nice folks at Box Office Mojo (www.boxofficemojo.com) have a handy list of all the money Jabba the Moore's films have made. Being the awesome guy I am, I'll save you all a trip.

He has directed ten movies.

His lifetime gross total as of today is $192,296,029.00. Sounds pretty impressive, no?

Well, it shouldn't. In the 29 years he's been inflicting his talent on us, three of those movies never got out of six figures. Six of them opened in fewer than 500 theaters. And quite frankly, if you transferred those lifetime earnings to the opening weekend of any given summer blockbuster, the producers and whoever greenlit it would be looking for work.

I don't know who's financing him, but it would be interesting to find out.

#7  The Variety review is unintentionally amusing:

How Michael Moore Lost His Audience

The fabled documentary muckraker keeps doing films with his trademark fusion of snark and liberal warning. Maybe it's time for him to mix it up.

“Fahrenheit 11/9,” his scathing riff on the administration of Donald J. Trump, will be lucky to gross one-tenth of what “Fahrenheit 9/11” did. That’s more than just a staggering comedown. It symbolizes a couple of things at once: how different the two eras are, but also how Michael Moore’s audience — there’s no other way to put it — has gradually drifted away. It symbolizes that Moore is no longer defining the dialogue. A Trump-era conservative would probably say, “It’s about time! Michael Moore has lied so much that it’s all finally caught up with him.” A Trump-era liberal would probably say, “I still agree with him, but I’ve seen enough Michael Moore movies. I know his message already.”

There are elements to be heeded in both those statements (even as a Moore believer, I’ve been troubled, on occasion, by his willingness to bend the truth to make a larger point). But the question of why Moore’s films are no longer connecting with the public in a major way has a meaning beyond the standard left/right dialectics. It’s about a problem that Moore may be able to solve, but if so, he’s going to have to rethink what he does. Not the content but the execution. Because as much as I remain a fan of Moore’s (I thought the cumulative effect of “Fahrenheit 11/9” was chilling), what he’s doing now is not, in the fullest sense, working. He needs to decide if he wants to rectify that.

Trump administration moves to restrict visas, citizenship for immigrants on welfare
[WashingtonExaminer] President Trump's administration unveiled a new regulation to limit green cards and visas for immigrants who have received a various forms of welfare, the Department of Homeland Security announced Saturday.

"This proposed rule will implement a law passed by Congress intended to promote immigrant self-sufficiency and protect finite resources by ensuring that they are not likely to become burdens on American taxpayers," DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said, per NBC.

The proposal is rooted in a federal law that restricts immigration for people "likely to become a public charge," according to U.S. Customs and Immigration Services; a "public charge" is someone "primarily dependent on the government for subsistence." A regulation promulgated in 1999 construed that law as applying only to cash benefits, NBC explained, but the new proposal would broaden the list of benefits.

"The [disqualifying] benefits generally represent the largest federal programs for low-income people by total expenditure that address basic living needs such as income, housing, food, and medical care," according to a DHS spokeswoman.

That has been a priority of Attorney General Jeff Sessions for years, particularly when he was the top Republican on the Budget Committee during President Barack Obama's tenure. Stephen Miller, a top communications aide when Sessions was in the Senate, is now a senior White House adviser.

"It is an explicit and unambiguous tenet in federal law that those granted entry into the U.S. must be able to support themselves financially," Sessions' team argued in 2013. In sum: Despite laws to the contrary, virtually no one is being turned away from the United States for relying on federal welfare."
