Libya Islamists Launch New Assault on Benghazi Airport
[AnNahar] Islamist fighters launched another offensive Wednesday on the airport in Libya's Benghazi, the final redoubt in the eastern city of an ex-general who has been waging war on them, an AFP correspondent said.

On Wednesday, the AFP correspondent in Benghazi said heavy artillery fire could be heard since dawn in the southern suburb of Benina, where the airport is located.

He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Another source, from Kilani's hometown of Zawiyah, said he had been killed in an ambush along with three companions as they were returning to Tripoli.

A hospital source in Zawiyah confirmed receiving Kilani's body, along with three others.

Kilani had served in the previous parliament as a member of the Wafa bloc, accused by its rivals of backing radical Islamists in Libya.

Fajr Libya rejects the legitimacy of the new parliament, elected in June, and of Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thani, who moved to the far eastern town of Tobruk in August for security reasons.

Its fighters, a powerful presence in the capital, called the same month for the reinstatement of the outgoing General National Congress.

The assembly tasked pro-Islamist Omar al-Hassi to form a parallel government, which is not recognized by the international community.

Jihadists Claim Attack That Kills Six Egypt Policemen
[IsraelTimes] A Lion of Islam group in Egypt has claimed the killing of six coppers in a roadside kaboom in the Sinai Peninsula, where security forces frequently clash with jihadists.

(Partisans of Jerusalem) have orchestrated a string of attacks to avenge a deadly government crackdown on supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi.

The al-Qaeda-inspired group posted a video late Tuesday on Twitter showing the bombing hours earlier of a security convoy on a road between the North Sinai lovely provincial capital el-Arish and Rafah on the Gazoo border.

An armored personnel carrier is seen flying into the air while a Lion of Islam shouts "Allahu Akbar."

The video was also posted on YouTube along with the group's logo of a black flag, an AK-47 assault rifle and an open Koran.

Urgent aid arrives in Warshefana after days of fierce clashes
[Libya Herald] Supplies from the Libyan Red Islamic Thingy and the International Red Thingy have arrived at Warshefana's Zahra Hospital following days of brutal violence in the area which has led to the deaths of dozens of civilians and combatants.

The Libyan Red Islamic Thingy and the ICRC said they had delivered enough supplies for up to 130 war-maimed as a temporary solution to the crisis.

Military sources in Warshefana claimed that casualties from yesterday's fighting alone had been devastatingly high. They alleged that as many as 40 had been killed, most of them civilians, with at least 70 maimed who have receiving treatment at Zahra Hospital. The source confirmed that the hospital had been struggling to meet the pace of injuries with a shortage of medical supplies as a result of the effective siege on the town.

forces on Warshefana continued into the night with reports of reinforcements arriving from Zawia and Janzour to join the onslaught. Libya Dawn positions were later hit by Arclight airstrikes of an unknown origin at Warshefana and a camp near Zuwara.

There were also unconfirmed reports that some Zawia residents had begun indiscriminately attacking civilians from Warshefana in retaliation for the capture of LROR leader and Zawia local Shaaban Hadia Al-Zawi, better known as Abu Obeida.

Fighting in Obari between pro- and anti-Libya Dawn groups
[Libya Herald] Fighting broke out this afternoon in Obari between local Tebu Death Eaters and a group of Tuaregs said to be Islamists and supporters of Libya Dawn
...aka Fajr Libya, the Islamist operation launched to counter that of General Khalifa Haftar (Operation Dignity). Financing and moral support come from Turkey and Qatar...
. The latter are reportedly not from Obari.

Communications with the desert town are extremely difficult at present but according to Tebu sources in Murzuk, the Tuareg group arrived in Obari three days ago and took the old cop shoppe as their headquarters. Today, according to the sources, they went to the petrol station and tried to take it over from Tebu militia guarding it. This led to a shootout which resulted in the Tuarges being forced out of both the petrol and cop shoppes. It is reported that a number of Tuaregs were killed in the fight and other injured but numbers have not bee confirmed.

The Tebus say they suffered no losses.

The Tebu sources also claim the Tuareg group is the same as one that tried to take over the nearby Sharara oilfield a month ago at the bidding of Libya Dawn. They also report that local Tuaregs in Obari have said that the group has nothing to do with them and that they are living peacefully with Tebus and Arabs in the town.

Last week, local Obari Tuaregs rejected an appeal from a visiting Misratan delegation that they support Libya Dawn.

Derna Islamist leader killed in Benghazi
[Libya Herald] One of the leaders of the Shoura Council of Islamic Youth in Derna, Salah Benali, was killed yesterday fighting with his militia alongside Ansar al-Sharia

and the Benghazi Revolutionaries Shoura Council (BRSC) in their bid to take Benina Airport.

The death has been reportedly been confirmed by an official with the Martyr Rafallah Sahati Brigade, out of which Ansar originally sprung and which is also part of the BRSC.

Contrary to its name which suggests that it is an advisory group, the Shoura Council of Islamic Youth is a militia which was formed at the beginning of April by amalgamating three existing radical Islamist militias in Derna -- the Army of the Islamic State of Libya, local members of Ansar al-Sharia and the private forces of Sufian Ben Qumu, who remains the main political power in the town.

The militia has earned itself a reputation for violence and militancy with some of its members displaying admiration for Al-Qaeda and sporting its black flag. It has carried out at least two public executions in the town which have been condemned as tantamount to murder by Amnesia Amnesty International.

The Benalis are a prominent local family most of whose members do not support extremism, "We don't understand why Saleh and his brother were attracted to it," one family member told the Libya Herald.

BBC team under attack in southern Russia
The team had just left a cafe in the town when at least three aggressive individuals approached our car, confronting and attacking us, says BBC Moscow correspondent Steve Rosenberg. Using physical violence the men grabbed the camera, smashed it on the road, and then escaped with it in a getaway car. During the scuffle the BBC cameraman was knocked to the ground and beaten.

Following the attack, the team spent more than four hours being questioned at a local police station. During that time, the recording equipment left behind in the car was tampered with; the hard drive of the main computer as well as several memory cards with video material had been wiped clean.

Mass Counter-Terror Raids In Australia
[DailyTelegraphAustralia] o Massive pre-dawn operation in Sydney and Brisbane involving 600 officers
o ASIO and counter-terrorism operation swooped on homes in north-western Sydney and Brisbane
o Several arrests made as raids continue

ASIO and counter terrorism police have swooped on homes across north-western Sydney and other states this morning in what is believed to be the largest anti-terrorism bust in the nation's history.

Several arrests have reportedly been made in the secret pre-dawn raid, which is still in progress.

The arrests follow the execution of a number of search warrants in Beecroft, Bellavista, Guildford, Merrylands, Northmead, Wentworthville, Marsfield, Westmead, Castle Hill, Revesby, Bass Hill and Regents Park.

The Australian Federal Police can also confirm it is conducting search warrants in Brisbane.

Warrants are being executed in the suburbs of Mount Gravatt East, Logan and Underwood.

As this activity remains ongoing, it is not appropriate to comment further at this time.

Further updates will be provided in due course.

The raid is believed to have been mounted following months of surveillance of people linked to the terrorist group Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

The Daily Telegraph has learned that an estimated 600 officers from the Australian Federal Police, NSW counter terrorism unit and ASIO launched the pre-emptive strike in the early hours of this morning.

The raids and arrests are believed to have been based on the execution of multiple ASIO and AFP warrants.

It is believed that dozens of suspects have been netted, with links to a Brisbane man who was recently arrested on suspected terrorism related charges.

It is believed that a terrorist network had been planning to carry out a series of attacks in Australia.

The raid follows the lifting of the national security alert level from medium to high last Friday by the outgoing director general of ASIO David Irvine.

It is believed the size of the raid eclipsed that of Operation Pendennis in 2005 when several hundred ASIO, AFP and NSW police arrested 13 men across Melbourne and the Sydney suburb of Bankstown, who had been planning bomb attacks in both capitals.
Update at 7:37 ET from Australia's 9News:
UPDATE: Former actor and "senior ISIL figure" Mohammed Baryalei named as man behind alleged Sydney beheading plot

Sydney terror accused Omarjan Azari was allegedly working with Australia's most senior ISIL member and Underbelly actor Mohammad Baryalei to commit acts of terror, police have said.

Mr Azari faced Central Local Court today charged with serious terrorism-related offences.

9NEWS understands Mr Azari is accused of plotting to abduct people off the streets and decapitate them in a manner similar to the recent ISIL beheadings of US and UK citizens in Syria. Mr Azari allegedly intended to wrap the bodies of victims in ISIL flags and upload video of the murders online. The video would help fuel the ISIL terror campaign which has led to the formation of an international coalition to eliminate the group.

Court documents showed police have accused Mr Azari of working with Baryalei, Fairfax Media has reported.

Baryalei, 33, is believed by authorities to be a senior ISIL member who recruited at least half of the Australians fighting with the terrorist group in Iraq and Syria. He was a former bouncer and played a paramedic on Underbelly: The Golden Mile.

Police said raids across Sydney this morning thwarted a plan to commit violence against "a member of the public on the streets".

Fifteen people were detained after over 800 police officers searched 15 homes and 10 cars in north-western Sydney, in a joint AFP and NSW Police counter-terrorism operation called "Operation Appleby".

Azari was the first person to be charged following the raids. He did not apply for bail today and will remain in custody until the case returns to court in November.

A second man has since been charged with weapons offences.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott said it's believed an Australian senior ISIL member overseas was ordering networks back in Australia to conduct "demonstration killings".

Police raids this morning were also carried out in suburbs in and around Brisbane but police said they weren't directly linked to the operation in Sydney. AFP Acting Chief Commissioner Andrew Colvin said the operation was following up on an investigation from last week. He said they were still working to determine links between the Brisbane and Sydney raids.

Last week, Brisbane man Omar Succarieh, 31, was arrested and charged with terrorism-related offences following a raid at an Islamic bookshop in Logan. He's accused of fundraising for Syria-based extremist group Jabhat al-Nusra and helping another man, Agim Kruezi, obtain funds to fight for a terror organisation overseas.

Mr Succarieh, who is due to apply for bail in court today, is believed to be the brother of Ahmed Succarieh, who reportedly became Australia's first suicide bomber in Syria last year.

Logan man Kruezi, 22, has alleged links to the Islamic State group.

Yesterday, a Lakemba money transfer business owned by the sister and brother-in-law of convicted Sydney terrorist Khaled Sharrouf was shut down. Authorities suspected it was sending millions of dollars to the Middle East to finance terrorism.

There are about 60 Australians believed to be fighting in Iraq and Syria with groups such as Islamic State, while another 100 are suspected of providing support from Australia.

Mr Abbott lifted the country's terror alert to high last Friday. Today he praised Australian police and security forces who he said were "one step ahead of those who would do us harm".

#4  Australia had better re-think the firearms thing in Australia. Some years ago, firearms were outlawed, confiscated and the citizens were disarmed. That turned out to be a very bad idea. They need something like our 2nd Amendment so that citizens have a even chance against wannabee beheaders and thugs. Moreover, it is the last defense against a tyrannical government. Enough politeness already with these jihadists SOBs. Should a citizen blows a couple of these jihadist a$$holes away in self defense, other jihadists might have second thoughts about their evil. Additionally, the world would be fewer a couple of jihadists.

France Detains Six People Suspected Of Recruiting Jihadists
[Ynet] Six people have been detained in La Belle France on suspicion of recruiting candidates for jihad, a judicial source said Wednesday, as the number of French citizens travelling to Iraq and Syria increases.

The suspects, two of whom are minors, were held in the suburbs of the eastern city of Lyon as part of an "anti-terrorism" probe launched in July.

According to a police source, a brother and a sister are among those detained since Tuesday, and one of the suspects is linked to Forsane Alizza (Knights of Pride), an Islamist holy warrior group that had called for La Belle France to become an Islamic caliphate and was banned in 2012.

An Ottawa X-ray technologist, Hisbahuddin Ahmed, is awaiting sentencing after he was found guilty in July of participating in the conspiracy.

A third man, Khurram Sher, a Canadian doctor of Pak heritage who once auditioned for a televised talent show, was acquitted at trial of terrorism last month.

Police had seized circuit boards and other materials that could be used to make bombs, from the group.

New York Man Charged With Trying to Recruit ISIS Fighters in US
[ABCNEWS.GO] Federal authorities have charged an upstate New York man with trying to persuade two others in the United States to join the Islamic State, or ISIS, the terrorist group wreaking havoc in Iraq and Syria that U.S. officials have been outspoken about for weeks.

Mufid Elfgeeh, 30, of Rochester, also plotted to kill U.S. soldiers who had returned from Iraq, federal prosecutors announced today.

Last year, two FBI informants began building relationships with Elfgeeh, who -- not realizing they were working with the FBI -- encouraged them to go overseas and join Lions of Islam in Syria, prosecutors allege in court documents. For months, Elfgeeh had been posting Tweets and other messages online praising ISIS and, among other things, urging others to donate a third of their salaries to Lions of Islam in Syria, according to charging documents.

ISIS "will one day rule the world with the will of Allah," Elfgeeh allegedly said in one message.

House authorizes arming, training of Syrian rebels
[USATODAY] A wary Congress voted Wednesday to authorize President Obama's mission to arm and train Syrian rebel forces as part of the administration's effort to dismantle the threat posed by the Islamic State militant group.

The bipartisan 273-156 vote came after days of debate in which lawmakers across the political spectrum expressed doubts about the scope and merits of the mission but conceded that the potential threat to the U.S. is too great to ignore.

Iraq
Suicide Attack Kills 7, Destroys Bridge in Iraq's Ramadi
[AnNahar] A suicide car kaboom killed seven people and destroyed a vital bridge Wednesday in Ramadi, the capital of the western province of Anbar where government forces have been battling jihadists.

Five other people were maimed in the afternoon blast, Mahmud al-Wazan, a colonel in the police force, told AFP. He said the victims appeared to be civilians.

Doctor Ahmad al-Ani from Ramadi hospital confirmed the casualty toll.

Wazan said the blast destroyed the Albu Faraj bridge on the Euphrates, in a northern district of Ramadi, which lies about 100 kilometers (60 miles) west of Baghdad.

"It is the fourth Ramadi bridge to get blown up and it was the last one civilians could use," he said.

The two remaining bridges have so far been used by the government security forces battling Islamic State jihadists who control some districts of the placid provincial capital.

The Sunni province of Anbar is a stronghold for the IS fighters who launched a major offensive across northern and western Iraq three months ago.

14 IS militants killed as chlorine-gas rocket explodes
At least 14 members of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group were killed Tuesday near Baghdad when a rocket whose warhead they were filling with chlorine gas exploded.

Iraqi security officials said seven more IS militants were injured in the incident, which occurred near the town of al-Dhuluiya, about 90 km north of Baghdad. Al-Dhuluiya was also where four members of the Iraqi security forces and Shiite militiamen suffered symptoms of asphyxiation after inhaling chlorine gas released by two improvised explosive devices.

It was the first time that chlorine has been used as a weapon in Iraq, although it is not uncommon in neighbouring Syria, where the regime's use of it has been denounced by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

Iraqi army launches offensive on Islamic State in three cities
[Dhaka Tribune] Iraqi forces launched an intense military operation against Islamic State holy warriors in three cities in central Iraq yesterday, fighting to regain control of lost ground, security sources said.

The offensives in Ramadi, Falluja and Haditha in the western province of Anbar started before dawn. Sunni tribes revolted in these areas in late 2013 when Iraq's former prime minister Nuri al-Maliki moved his forces into the cities to suppress a year-long anti-government protest movement.

Islamic State holy warriors then entered the cities and became the dominate force over the course of several months' fighting against the Shi'ite-led government.

Security sources said the Iraqi Army's 8th division hit areas in western Ramadi with mortars, artillery and rocket fire. Government-aligned Sunni tribal fighters also clashed with Islamic State in Ramadi, leaving eight people dead, a hospital source in Ramadi said.

In Falluja, heavy shelling and Iraqi air force strikes hit the al-Sujur district on the edge of the city, killing 12 civilians, medics in Falluja said.

The Chinese vessel left the area without suffering any damage.

The 31st fleet, comprising Bayandor destroyer and Bandar Abbas military ship, has set sail for the high seas as part of Iran's plans to protect the country's cargo ships and oil tankers in different shipping routes.

This is the second time the Iranian servicemen could retake a Chinese ship hijacked by pirates.

Back in July, Iran's Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said the country's naval forces have saved vessels from around 20 countries in the international waters from pirate attacks.
