Afghanistan
Afghan Forces Kill 122 Islamic State Members After Kabul Attack
Kill 100 of them a day and the problem should go away in a year or so. Or at least it will get squeezed out of the region . . . .
Afghan troops killed 122 Islamic State militants after the group claimed responsibility for the country's deadliest single attack in 15 years over the weekend, according to the nation's Interior Ministry.

In the past 24 hours, Afghanistan security forces assaulted the insurgents in the eastern province of Nangarhar, killing a deputy military commander and arresting 20 others, according to a statement sent by the ministry on Tuesday.

On Saturday, more than 80 people were killed and another 231 were wounded when suicide bombers triggered two explosions at a rally by hundreds of ethnic Hazaras in Kabul. The attacks shattered claims by President Ashraf Ghani made four months ago that Islamic State had been wiped out in Afghanistan.

Haqqani network commander dies
A commander of the notorious Haqqani terrorist network was killed during a clash in eastern Khost province of Afghanistan.

According to the local security officials, the commander was identified as Kernel and was involved in insurgency activities for the Haqqani terrorist network.

Provincial police chief Faizulllah Ghairat confirmed that Kernel was killed during a clash with the Afghan forces in Sapera district.

He said Kernel was originally a resident of Khost province and was involved in major destructive activities as he was fighting for the Haqqani network.

Ghairat further added that two companions of Kernel were wounded and another was arrested by the Afghan forces.

The anti-government armed militant groups have not commented regarding the report so far.

The Haqqani terrorist network is accused of staging numerous cross-border attacks from their base in North Waziristan, including the 19-hour siege at the US Embassy in Kabul in September 2011.

Haqqani network was formed in the late 1970s by Jalaluddin Haqqani. The group is allied with al-Qaida and the Afghan Taliban and cooperates with other terrorist organizations in the region.

The US Department of State designated the HQN as a Foreign Terrorist Organization on September 7, 2012.
Yes, you read it correctly. The date was 7 Sept 2012. A most reluctant designation, I can assure you.

ISIS loyalists release photos of Kabul attack suicide bombers

of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group have released photographs which purportedly shows the two jacket wallahs who attacked a mass demonstration in Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
The photographs were released by the sympathizers of the terror group on Twitter social media a day after the attack left at least 80 people dead.

The two suicide bombers have been identified as Najibullah Al-Afghani and Talhat Al-Afghan, according to the caption of the photographs.

The incident in Deh Mazang area took place on Saturday afternoon as hundreds of thousands of demonstrators had gathered in the area to protest against a power project.

The Ministry of Interior (MoI) released the casualties toll late on Saturday night hours after the incident took place.

According to MoI, at least 80 people bit the dust and 231 others sustained injuries in the attack.

The Taliban group rejected hand in the deadly attack and said the move was aimed at sparking tensions among the communities in the country.

This is the first time the loyalists of the terror group grabbed credit behind such a deadly attack in the capital city although assumptions are that the terror group is not capable to stage such a major attack in the city.

The claim by ISIS acknowleding responsibility behind the attack comes as the loyalists of the terror group have been attempting to expand foothold in the country but are mainly confined in the remote districts of eastern Nangarhar

province.

In the meantime the Afghan forces as well as the US forces in Afghanistan are regularly targeting the loyalists of the terror group in eastern Nangarhar province to root out their presence from the country.

Libyan Forces Advance in Islamic State-Held City
[WSJ] Forces for the United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
-backed Libyan government said Monday they had seized the security headquarters in Sirte, a crucial step toward retaking control of the coastal city that Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. has held for 16 months.

Sirte is the Death Eater group’s most important base outside its strongholds in Syria and Iraq, and its fighters have put up stiff resistance since the initial drive by government-allied forces into the city in late May.

But Libyan commanders said Monday they had shrunk Islamic State’s area of control around Sirte, the birthplace of late dictator Muammar Qadaffy
...a proud Arab institution for 42 years, now among the dear departed, though not the dearest...
, from 150 miles of coastline to just two square miles in the city center. U.S. and Libyan intelligence officials earlier this year estimated some 5,000 murderous Moslems were inside Sirte, though they say the number has dwindled.

"We’re slowly tightening our grip on them," a senior Libyan officer said.

The security headquarters in Sirte is a complex in a part of the city that the forces backing the government have been trying to enter for weeks.

Islamic State leaders have promoted Sirte as a destination for foreign recruits, urging migration to the city to bolster its presence there.

As recently as May, U.S. military commanders considered an air campaign against Islamic State targets in Libya. They were concerned the group was preparing to stage attacks from the North African country to counter the increasing military pressure on cities it controls in Iraq and Syria.

Egyptian policeman killed in a Sinai attack claimed by ISIS
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Egypt's interior ministry said a gunman rubbed out a police officer in north Sinai in an attack claimed on Monday by ISIS.

The gunman shot the police major in El-Arish, the bustling provincial capital of North Sinai, on Sunday night, the ministry said in a statement.

The murderous Moslem group's Egypt affiliate has been waging an insurgency in the peninsula that has killed hundreds of policeman and soldiers.

The group said in a statement circulated on social media that its fighters "assassinated" the major and made off with his car and automatic rifle.

The bandidos holy warriors have kept up the attacks in Sinai, mostly roadside kaboomings and ambushes, despite a massive military campaign to uproot ISIS from the eastern peninsula bordering Israel and the Paleostinian Gazoo Strip.

Most of the group's attacks have targeted security forces, but it has also attacked Egyptian Christians and tourists.

The group grabbed credit for bombing a Russian airliner carrying holiday makers from an Egyptian resort last year, killing all 224 people on board.

18 detained over sectarian violence in Beni Suef
No massacre yet...
[AlAhram] Egyptian prosecutors ordered the detention of 18 people in connection with sectarian violence that took place Friday in a village in Beni Suef, the latest in a series of such attacks in recent weeks.

The incident was sparked by a group of Moslem youngsters who hurled stones at a Christian-owned building in Al-Kharsa village after reports its owner would turn it into a church without a license. Security forces intervened to ease the situation and security cordons were put up around houses in the village.

Prosecutors Sunday ordered 18 people detained for four days over the violence, a judicial source said.

They face charges of "disrupting public peace and assaulting personal freedoms" and "damaging the house and a car of a Coptic villager."

A local housing committee ordered a halt to development work of the house of local Nnadi Yacoub, saying he violated the issued license.

Christians, who make up about 10 percent of Egypt's population of 90 million, have long complained of discrimination and sectarian attacks in the predominantly Sunni Moslem country.

The incident in Beni Suef is the latest in a wave of sectarian incidents in the country's south.

Last week, a Moslem mob stabbed a Coptic Christian to death during a street argument in the southern governorate of Minya.

The attack prompted President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi to warn against attempts to "drive a wedge" between Egyptians and vowed to hold violations to account.

Days earlier, a group of Moslems attacked and torched houses of Christians in the village of Abu-Yacoub, also in Minya. The Family House, a group of Moslem and Christian leaders that promotes peaceful coexistence, said Saturday reconcilation was successfuly reached between warring families in that village, while settlement efforts continue elsewhere.

In May, Moslem villagers torched seven homes of Christians and assaulted a Christian man's elderly mother, parading her naked in public. The assault in Minya's El-Karm village was sparked by rumours that the man was having an illicit relationship with a Moslem woman.

That attack sparked public outcry and prompted El-Sisi to pledge action on sectarian incidents.

Regional armies struggle in last push against Boko Haram
"You'll all be able to go home soon. Boko Haram is nearly finished," Niger's Interior Minister Mohamed Bazoum told a crowd of refugees seated quietly on dusty, sun-baked flats.

His words of optimism were belied by the dozens-strong security detail required to protect him as he toured his country's southern border.

Seven years into an insurgency that spread from Nigeria into Chad, Niger and Cameroon, regional armies are now in a final push to defeat Boko Haram, a once obscure Islamist sect turned deadly militant group.

But lingering divisions in the countries' multi-national joint task force (MNJTF) are complicating that mission.

"If there's no strategy to attack Boko Haram together, we won't ever finish with them," Mahamadou Liman Ali, an opposition lawmaker from southern Niger, told Reuters in Niamey.

At a time when the world's wealthy nations are focused on the fight against Islamic State and al Qaeda, financial support for the MNJTF's efforts against Boko Haram, which has pledged its allegiance to IS, have fallen short of targets.

That has left the task force's members - including Chad, the region's capable but increasingly reluctant military powerhouse - to shoulder the bulk of the costs of fighting the group.

Boko Haram's victims, which include 2.4 million displaced, live in hope that this month-old offensive - dubbed Operation Gama Aiki, or "finish the job" in the local Hausa language - might succeed where others have failed.

Some have doubts. From where he stays in southern Niger, refugee Usman Kanimbu sees smoke rising from the coalition's air strikes on insurgent positions in Nigeria, the home he fled.

"We've fled eight times. Each time we arrive somewhere Boko Haram attacks again. We would keep running, but we can't afford to anymore," he said. "I'm not sure this will ever end."

FRAGILE PROGRESS

As the sun sets over the Nigerian border, a featureless expanse of sand and scrub trees, soldiers from Niger peered over an earthen bern at territory held by Boko Haram.

The skies above the borderlands now rumble daily with the sound of fighter jets. Chadian troops have ventured onto Lake Chad, a Boko Haram stronghold. Regional military officers say they are taking back ground from the insurgents.

The task force may indeed be making headway against Boko Haram, which has fewer footholds than it once did. Its leader, Abubakar Shekau, may even be dead.

But the MNJTF is a far cry from what it was conceived to be, a dedicated 8,700-strong force blending soldiers from Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon, Chad and Benin.

Instead, the nations rely on their own armies to deal with Boko Haram threats. Troops from Chad, which has the region's strongest military, reinforce when needed then head back home.

"Each force is based in its country of origin. There's no integrated force with battalions moving in perfect coordination," said Vincent Foucher, West Africa researcher at International Crisis Group (ICG).

The need for operational integration in the fight against an enemy that knows no borders was exposed during a similar regional offensive early last year.

After troops from Chad and Niger drove Boko Haram from a string of towns in Nigeria's far north, they waited in vain for the Nigerian army to arrive and hold them.

"We were there for three or four months, but the Nigerian troops that were meant to take over from us were not ready," Niger's Brigadier General Abdou Sidikou Issa told Reuters.

Niger and Chad withdrew, according to a source with knowledge of the operation, because they feared becoming an occupying force. Issa said the troops were overstretched logistically, however. Either way, the vacuum they left allowed Boko Haram to reclaim positions and carry on cross-border raids.

"That's what's created problems for us again today," Issa said.

The MNJTF was meant to prevent a repeat of those kinds of incidents. The African Union endorsed the force in January 2015 and a headquarters was established in Chad's capital N'Djamena to coordinate forces against the ever-evolving threat of Boko Haram.

The AU has struggled to rally contributors to foot the bill for the MNJTF's $700 million budget, however. Donors, led by Nigeria and France, pledged $250 million in February, just over a third of what was needed, but dispersal has been slow. The United States has also aided with intelligence and training.

A senior MNJTF officer, who asked not to be named as he was not authorised to speak, told Reuters the money received so far was so little that it only had covered the cost of 11 vehicles and some radio equipment, with the individual armies bearing the rest of the costs.

"There are all these declarations of intentions, but, in concrete terms, nothing has been done yet," he said.

A spokesman for the MNJTF did not respond to a request for comment.

"HURTING"

A Boko Haram attack last month on Bosso, in southeastern Niger, which killed 32 soldiers and a number of civilians, was the kind of incident the MNJTF was created for.

But rather than the multinational force kicking into action as it is supposed to, Niger's President Mahamadou Issoufou had to fly to N'Djamena to lobby neighbour Chad for help.

Having played a lead role along with France in a 2013 intervention in Mali to drive back jihadist groups there, Chad's President Idriss Deby has become indispensable in the fight against West African Islamists.

But with low oil prices now causing Deby economic headaches at home and little direct financial support coming from his allies, analysts say he has grown resentful.

Two weeks after President Issoufou's visit, Reuters visited a half-finished hotel complex in the southern Niger city of Diffa that had been fully booked out by the Chadian army. The Chadians were nowhere to be seen. Dozens of bungalows sat empty.

It would take more than a month for them to arrive.

Excluding its oil sector, after 7 percent growth in 2014, Chad's economy contracted by 1.5 percent last year, according to the International Monetary Fund. Oil output rose to record levels, but low prices meant revenues dipped.

"This is costing (Deby) a lot of money. There's a big budget crisis ... He's definitely hurting," said Nathaniel Powell, a researcher with the Swiss-based Fondation Pierre du Bois.

A Chadian government official did not respond to a request for comment.

Niger's tiny army - 15,000 troops to cover 1.2 million square kilometres (463,300 square miles) of territory - is overstretched by Boko Haram, but also by the overflow of unrelated Islamist violence from Mali to its west.

Cameroon has meanwhile deployed thousands of troops, including special forces, to its north to secure its own territory against a suicide bombing campaign.

And while Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari has shown more willingness than his predecessor to take on the insurgents, decades of graft have hollowed out his military and it now faces resurgent militancy in the oil-producing Niger Delta.

The senior MNJTF officer said the regional neighbours would continue to improve the force. In the meantime, they had no other choice than to act.

"If we wait, Boko Haram isn't going to wait for us, are they?" he said.

, military sources said on Monday.

The festivities began on Thursday when government forces launched an offensive aimed at retaking the towns of Haradh and Midi in Hajja province on the border.

"At least 48 (Shiite Houthi) rebels and forces loyal to (ex-president) President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh

Thirty-four loyalist soldiers were also killed, a pro-government source said.

Most of the soldiers were killed in kabooms of landmines planted by the rebels, he said, adding that dozens were maimed on both sides.

Loyalist forces had succeeded in retaking a border post at the entrance of Haradh and pushing towards the town centre, another military source said.

The offensive aims to advance on rebel-held Sanaa from the west after loyalist forces have so far failed to enter the capital from the east.

It comes as the Yemeni rivals hold UN-brokered peace talks in Kuwait that have so far failed to end the conflict that has killed more than 6,400 people since March last year.

Yemeni loyalists are supported by a Saudi-led coalition that has been battling the Iran-backed rebels since March 2015.

Five Saudi border guards killed in clashes in south
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Five Saudi border guards were killed on Monday in festivities with gangs seeking to enter from Yemen, state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
al-Ekhbariya reported, citing the Saudi interior ministry.

A ministry statement added the border guards detected attempts by "hostile" gangs to cross the border on several fronts in the southern region of Najran on Monday morning. Eight hours of festivities ensued.

The statement did not identify the gangs, but Saudi forces and fighters from Yemen’s Houthi

Peace talks in Kuwait between Yemen’s government and the Houthis to end the conflict have dragged on for more two months with few concrete results. A truce that began on April 10 has dampened fighting, but skirmishes continue almost daily.

In a separate incident, the Saudi-led military coalition said an Apache helicopter crashed in the Yemeni city Marib, east of the capital Sanaa due to bad weather, state news agency SPA reported.

The pilot and co-pilot from the Saudi Royal land forces were killed, SPA added from the statement.

Bangladesh
Bangladeshi police kill nine Islamic State militants
Police in Bangladesh’s capital raided a five-story building Tuesday and killed nine suspected Islamic hard boys, the country’s police chief said.

Inspector General of Police A.K.M. Shahidul Hoque said the raid took place in Dhaka’s Kalyanpur area and one suspect was nabbed
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
and was being treated for injuries in a hospital.

Hoque said officials were investigating to see which group the men belonged to, but their clothing and other evidence showed it was likely that they belonged to local banned group Jumatul Mujahedeen Bangladesh, or JMB.

The group is blamed for a July 1 attack in Dhaka’s Gulshan diplomatic area, where 20 people, including Italians and Japanese, were killed when armed gunnies attacked a restaurant.

Hoque said the suspected Death Eaters were killed when police raided the building used as a den by the suspected Islamic hard boys.

He said the suspects attempted to flee the building by shooting their way out, but were stopped by police who cordoned off the area.

Explosive experts were searching the building, Hoque said.

"It will take a few hours to have a clear idea. But we have found them clad in black dress ... suggesting they belong to the same group involved in the attack in Gulshan," he said.

"We have not found any evidence about any connection with the IS. They are members of a local group, JMB, I think," he said.

Local media reported that the arrested man was being treated for bullet wounds.

group grabbed credit for the July 1 attack and for many other recent attacks on atheist bloggers, foreigners and minority groups, but authorities have rejected the claims, saying there are no signs of the group having any operations in the country.

Instead, the government says the local hard boy groups including the JMB are behind the attacks that have drawn global attention.

Police Arrest Last Suspect from Brazil Olympics Attack Group
I know we all are relieved that the amateurs have been cleared from the field.
[AnNahar] Brazilian police Sunday tossed in the calaboose
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
the last remaining member of what authorities have called an "amateur" IS-linked group preparing attacks ahead of the Rio Olympics.

The other 11 members were arrested Thursday through Friday and have been transferred to a maximum security prison near the border with Paraguay, officials said.

The group is alleged to have attempted to form an hard boy cell called Defenders of Sharia, of which several members had sworn loyalty to the Islamic State

group. They were allegedly preparing attacks and had attempted to make contact online with an arms dealer in Paraguay to buy an AK-47 assault rifle.

Justice Minister Alexandre de Moraes, however, has said the members were "absolutely amateur" and "disorganized." He also said they had no specific targets.

The final member, who will be sent to federal prison, was located by military police in Comodoro, a city in the western state of Mato Grosso, officials said in a statement.

Members of the group lived in various locations across Brazil and their contact had been limited mostly to exchanging messages on the WhatsApp and Telegram mobile services.

The detainees are accused of giving themselves Arabic names and praising the recent massacre of 49 people at a gay nightclub in Florida by a man who pledged loyalty to the IS group.

Last week, Brazil said it was bolstering security for the August 5-21 Olympics following the truck attack in the French city of Nice, which killed 84 people and left scores badly maimed. The attack has been claimed by IS.

Brazil's Olympics security plan calls for the mobilization of some 85,000 members of the security forces.

Four terror attacks in one week in Germany
[SAT] Germany has been shaken by four attacks in a week, three of them by asylum seekers while two of them claimed by the Islamic State (IS) group. Heightened social insecurity prompts criticism again over the German government’s open-door refugee policies.

Calls for tougher control over refugees renewed after the Sunday explosion in Ansbach in the southern German state of Bavaria, killed the 27-year-old Syrian perpetrator himself and wounded 15 people.

The blast that took place at the entrance of an outdoor music festival was claimed by the IS again, following a July 18 axe attack by a 17-year-old Afghan refugee on a train near the southern city of Wurzburg, in which five people were injured and the attacker was shot dead by police.

Also on Sunday, hours before the Ansbach blast, a 21-year-old Syrian refugee killed a 45-year-old Polish woman with a machete in what the police said was a crime of passion in the southwestern city of Reutlingen.

A deadly shooting spree late Friday in Munich, with no link found with terrorism, killed nine innocents. The attacker, a German-born 18-year-old son of Iranian immigrants, shot himself dead.

'IS Member' Arrested at Sarajevo Airport

group has been jugged
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
at Sarajevo airport, media and police said on Monday.

The 19-year-old Bosnian, arrested Saturday after arriving on a flight from Istanbul, was sought by Bosnian authorities for "terrorism" and "organizing a terrorist group", border police said in a statement without elaborating.

Local media identified the man as Almir Dzimic and said he had joined IS in Syria in 2014. He had previously lived in a village near the northern Bosnian town of Maglaj, known as a stronghold of radical Islam, reports said.

About 40 percent of the Balkan country's 3.8 million people are Moslem. The rest are mainly Catholic or Orthodox Christian.

While the vast majority of Bosnian Moslems are moderates, radical Islam arrived during the country's inter-ethnic war in the 1990s via imported muscle who flocked from North Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

According to a study published last month, the flow of Bosnian jihadists to Syria and Iraq has almost stopped -- although nearly 200 of them are still there, including 60 minors.

Since 2012, 330 Bosnians have gone to the region to join jihad. Of the 188 men among them, at least 50 have been killed and 47 have returned to Bosnia, said the report by the Sarajevo-based think-tank Atlantic Initiative.

Poland arrests Iraqi man for possession of explosives
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Law enforcement officials in central Poland said Monday that a 48-year-old Iraqi man has been jugged
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
on charges of possessing explosives.

The arrest on Sunday in Lodz took place just days before Pope Francis comes to Poland to meet with hundreds of thousands of young people from around the globe for celebrations of the World Youth Day.

Poland’s Interior Minister Mariusz Blaszczak says the gathering will be safe.

Beata Marczak, spokeswoman for prosecutors in Lodz said that "small amounts of explosives, not sufficient to make an kaboom" were found on the man. He could face up to eight years in prison if convicted on charges of illegal possession of explosives.

The man was questioned in English and put under two months’ arrest, but there were "no grounds for allegations of terrorism," Marczak said.

The investigation is supervised by the Internal Security Agency, she said.

Lodz court front man Pawel Urbaniak earlier Monday said that the man’s identity is being investigated as he had "very basic" documents on him.
Fake Syrian passport with a Hungarian entry stamp?
The man has no permanent address in Poland.

Blaszczak says Border Guards have denied entry to some 200 people since July 4, when Poland introduced temporary border controls due to the world youth meeting and the NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
summit that was held in Warsaw July 8-9.
Al Ahram adds:
Private news channel Polsat News reported that the explosive traces were found on the man's luggage and clothes at hotels in Lodz and Krakow. It added that the man had been detained at the hotel in Lodz on Sunday and had been in possession of notes on preparing terrorist acts against French supermarkets in Poland. Polsat News described him as a 48-year-old who arrived in Poland a couple of weeks ago after being expelled from Sweden. Earlier he had lived in Switzerland for several years.

Suicide bomber kills 10 people north of Baghdad
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A jacket wallah detonated an explosives-rigged vehicle near a checkpoint north of Baghdad on Monday, killing 10 people, officials said.

The blast at the entrance to the town of Khales also maimed 36 people, according to Hassan al-Mamuri, the local official responsible for the area, and Faris al-Azzawi, the front man for the Diyala province health department.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but ISIS carries out frequent suicide kabooms in Iraq.

The blast came a day after a suicide kaboom claimed by ISIS killed at least 15 people in Baghdad's Kadhimiyah neighborhood.

ISIS overran large areas north and west of Baghdad in 2014, but Iraqi forces have since regained significant ground and are conducting operations to set the stage for the battle to recapture djinn-infested Mosul

, the last ISIS-held city in the country.

The Death Eaters have responded to the battlefield setbacks by striking civilians, and experts have warned there may be more such attacks as the Death Eaters continue to lose ground.

"They rely less on usra (talks) and more on technology to communicate and indoctrinate their followers," he told The Star yesterday.

While the JI elements were mainly operating from Johor, Selangor, Negri Sembilan and Sabah, SAC Ayob revealed that IS recruitment was much more widespread.

Since 2013, Perak has the most number of arrested snuffies at 33.

Air strikes, rebel fire kill 19 in Syria’s Aleppo
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Air strikes and barrel kabooms killed 16 civilians in rebel-held parts of Aleppo province on Monday, with rebel rocket fire onto government areas killing three more, a monitor said.

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 10 civilians had been killed in multiple air strikes on the town of rebel-held Atareb in Aleppo province.

The group said the strikes in the early hours of Monday morning were believed to have been carried out by Russian warplanes, and hit several locations including a market area.

Russia is a key ally of the government and began air strikes in support of regime forces in September 2015.

The Observatory - which relies on a network of sources inside Syria for its information - says it determines what planes carried out raids according to their type, location, flight patterns and the munitions involved.

Footage obtained by AFP of the aftermath of the strikes showed the local civil defense unit trying to put out a fire in the rubble of one collapsed building.

Nearby, people combed through the debris trying to extract medicine from what appeared to be the remains of a pharmacy or clinic.

Elsewhere, crushed fruit and vegetables were mixed in with pieces of brick and concrete.

In Aleppo city meanwhile, at least six non-combatants were killed in barrel kabooms by government forces on eastern rebel-held neighborhoods, the Observatory said.

The monitor said the toll was expected to rise because of the number of people with injuries and still trapped under rubble.

An AFP journalist at the scene of one of the attacks in the Al-Mashhad neighborhood said civil defense workers were struggling to retrieve survivors who were trapped under heavy pieces of debris.

He said rescuers had managed to pull one boy alive from the rubble, but the rest of his family were dead and still trapped beneath the remains of a collapsed building.

Once Syria's economic powerhouse, Aleppo has been ravaged by the conflict that began in March 2011 with anti-government protests.

The city has been roughly divided between government control in the west and rebel control in the east since mid-2012.

In recent weeks, government forces seized parts of the only remaining supply route into the city's east, severing opposition neighborhoods from the outside world and prompting food shortages and spiraling prices.

The government regularly bombs the east of the city, and rebels often fire rockets into western districts.

The Observatory said at least three civilians had been killed in rebel fire on western Aleppo on Monday.

Syrian state news agency SANA said the dead were a pregnant woman and her child.

More than 280,000 people have been killed in Syria since the conflict began, and more than half the country has been displaced.

Powerful car bomb blast hits Damascus
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A boom-mobile blast hit Damascus on Monday, Syrian state news agency SANA reported, without giving details of casualties.

An AFP journalist heard the powerful kaboom, which SANA said hit the modern, upmarket Kafar Sousse area in the southwest of the war-torn country’s capital.

The official Al-Ikhbariya television channel said at least one person was injured, while the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which also reported the car kaboom, spoke of casualties without giving details.
