Roadside Bomb Kills Eight Civilians in Afghanistan
[AnNahar] A roadside kaboom killed eight members of an Afghan family, including children, just hours after the Taliban claimed their upcoming spring offensive would "safeguard" civilian lives, officials said Thursday. The blast destroyed the family's vehicle in Khash Rod district of southwestern Nimroz province late Wednesday as they were travelling home.

"The roadside kaboom hit a vehicle carrying a family, killing two men, one woman and four children," Ahmad Arab, front man for the provincial authorities, told Agence La Belle France Presse. "Another family member who was maimed and taken to the hospital died later."

Amir Mohammad Akhundzada, the governor of the province, blamed the Taliban for the incident.

"The bomb had been planted to target Afghan cops," he said.

The Taliban on Wednesday said their annual spring offensive will begin on Friday, vowing nationwide attacks in what is expected to be the bloodiest fighting season in a decade as NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis....
forces pull back from the frontlines.

In their statement, the Taliban said their top priority during the offensive will be to "safeguard and protect the lives and properties of civilian people".

No group grabbed credit for Wednesday's incident, but roadside kabooms -- which often cause civilian casualties -- have been the Taliban's weapon of choice in their 13-year war against foreign and Afghan forces.

The number of civilians killed and maimed jumped 22 percent in 2014 compared to the previous year, according to the United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

And in the first three months of 2015, civilian casualties from ground fighting were up eight percent on the same period last year, a new UNAMA report said.

A front man for the Battalion 166, Khaled Abujazia, said that fighting involving heavy artillery was taking place at a number of downtown locations in Qadaffy's former hometown and that two members of the battalion had been killed and five others maimed as it tried to dislodge the Islamists from positions held by them.

Soddy warplanes hit targets in Yemen's Ibb province
The Saudi warplanes targeted on Thursday different Yemeni provinces, destroying a mosque in Ibb.

The Yemeni army continued their anti-Qaeda operations striking targets in Aden.

An Iranian aid plane, carrying stuff paid for by the Widows and Orphans Ammunition Fund, was prevented from landing at Sanaa airport.

Although the Soddy coalition announced on April 21 the halt of its aggression, its air raids on the various Yemeni cities did not stop.

New 'Green Brigade' of IS Claims Yemen Attack
[AnNahar] A newly announced division of the Islamic State

group calling itself the "Green Brigade" on Thursday claimed a bombing in Yemen

that it said had killed five Iranian catspaws.

In a message on Twitter, the group said it had struck a vehicle of the Houthis in Yarim in the central province of Ibb on Wednesday.

Al-Qaeda has traditionally been the dominant jihadist group in Yemen, where a Saudi-led military coalition has carried out a month of air strikes against the Huthis and their allies.

IS claimed its first attack in Yemen on March 20 -- multiple suicide kabooms targeting Huthis at Shiite mosques in Sanaa that killed 142 people and maimed more than 350.

Al-Qaeda and IS, both Sunni krazed killer groups, consider Shiites to be heretics.

The Yarim attack is the first claimed by IS Death Eaters in Ibb province, where residents on Thursday also reported fresh bombing by the Saudi-led coalition.

Italian police arrest 18 in AQ plot to attack Vatican
[HotAir] Italian police raided several locations today throughout the country, arresting eighteen people in an effort to shut down a “very well-structured” al-Qaeda finance and operations network. The ring had targeted the Vatican in 2010 and again just recently, and had also worked to raise money through human-trafficking operations. Even with that, though, the ring predates the post-Qaddafi surge in refugees, and was comprised mainly of Pakistanis, not North Africans.
Hot Air has a good selection of links about the story. Go there and follow for all the details.

Denmark: Muslims who whipped woman in face with iron chains laugh in court
h/t Gates of Vienna
According to the indictment, the assault began at approximately 00.10 at Vesterbro in Copenhagen on Christmas night, as Mads Schøllhammer received a major blow to the head with a glass bottle that shattered.

Then he received several blows to the head with a chain lock and wire lock, and the accused gave him "countless" punches and kicks to the head and body. Mads Schøllhammer fell down, but the defendants continued to beat him in the head and body with fists and the chain lock, and they kicked him in the body and head.

Then the four youths pushed Nanna Skovmand to the ground and beat her "several" times in the head with the chain lock.

Translated from EB:

"There were both laughing and high fives when a group of young men today sat in the court, accused of a serious assault on Nanna Skovmand and Mads Schøllhammer on Christmas night.

A few times during the reading of the indictment, the defendants broke out in laughter -- partly when the details of the attack were read. ...

According to 23-year-old Nanna Skovmand, the four defendants started the attack by beating her boyfriend as they were walking in Vesterbro at Christmas night.

As she tried to interrupt the attack, the group went berserk at her and struck with both chains and wire locks. She was also knocked down and kicked.

India-Pakistan
34 militants killed in Waziristan
[Dawn] At least 34 suspected Death Eaters were killed in festivities in South Waziristan and air strikes in North Wazoo on Tuesday night.

The Inter-Services Public Relations said in a statement on Wednesday that 22 Death Eaters had been killed in "precise air strikes in areas ahead of Dattakhel".

Sources said military planes pounded myrmidon hideouts in Toor Tangi area of Dattakhel and Zoi Saidgi of Shawal. Three hideouts and compounds were destroyed and 22 terrorists, including a key Taliban capo, were killed.

An ISPR front man told Dawn that another 12 Death Eaters were killed in festivities with security forces in Shaktui and Kajhori areas of South Waziristan.

Intelligence and myrmidon sources confirmed the reports. They said a group of Death Eaters attacked a checkpost in Karkanrh area of Shaktui. Five Death Eaters were killed after security forces fired back. Troops took hold o four bodies while the Death Eaters managed to take away one body.

A search operation is under way in the Shaktui area and all entry and exit points have been sealed.

The sources said Death Eaters fired rockets on checkposts in Dadam Shah, Lakki Sra, Kajhori Top, and Kajhori West in Ghimbaki area of South Waziristan at 11pm on Tuesday. They used heavy weapons in the attack. The security forces returned fire, killing seven myrmidons, including commander Malang.

But Tari Azam, a front man of the Mehsud myrmidon group, claimed that only five Death Eaters were maimed.

The sources said Death Eaters also fired rockets on Larami checkpost in Tangi Badinzai area of South Waziristan on Tuesday. Three security personnel suffered injuries. The security forces, they said, had advanced into Tangi Badinzai area, once a stronghold of myrmidon commander Shamim Masud.

Pakistan Military Claims Killing 47 Taliban Insurgents
[AnNahar] Pakistain's military Thursday claimed to have killed at least 47 Taliban fighters in two days of Arclight airstrikes in the restive northwest as part of anti-insurgent offensives that began last year.
Question: How difficult is it to count bodies after an airstrike, if relying on pilots' observations? How does Pakistani pilot obsevational accuracy compare to American ditto?
The latest strikes hit the Datta Khel area of North Wazoo tribal district, close to the Afghan border, considered a stronghold of Taliban holy warriors. The area has been repeatedly targeted by U.S. drones in the past.

"Twenty-two bad boyz were potted in precise aerial strikes late last night in (an) area (close to) Datta Khel in North Waziristan Agency," the military said in a statement Thursday.
Question: What exactly does precise mean in the context of the Pakistani air force? How does this compare to the American AF definition of the term?
The military has been stepping up its response Pakistain's Islamist insurgency, which has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of civilians since 2004 when Al-Qaeda and Talibs fled from Afghanistan to its tribal areas.

Thursday's attacks come the day after 20 snuffies were killed in the Tirah valley of Khyber tribal district, where the Pak Taliban and Lashkar-e-Islam
...a group of Islamic bandidos infesting Khyber Agency. It's headed by a former bus driver....
groups have strongholds.

"In precise aerial strikes in Tirah, Khyber, today, 20 murderous Moslems -- including three jacket wallahs -- were killed. Destroyed hideouts of murderous Moslems include their ammo and ration dumps," the military said in a statement late Wednesday.
A nice, soldierly report. How close is it likely to be to what actually happened?
In another incident late Wednesday, the military said it had killed five murderous Moslems in a search operation in Shakto area of South Waziristan tribal district.
Real bad guys, or "Round up the usual suspects, Sgt. Md. Belalullah"?
Khyber is one of seven autonomous tribal districts along Pakistain's mountainous western border, which became a hotbed of Islamist snuffies following the U.S.-led invasion of neighboring Afghanistan in 2001.
And whose fault was that, O sages of the ISI?
The military began its latest offensive in Khyber in October 2014, four months after by a bloody Taliban attack on Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
airport ended peace talks and triggered a similar operation began in North Waziristan district.

Airstrikes, artillery, mortars and ground troops have all been used to take back territory.

Both conflict zones are off-limits to journalists, making it difficult to verify the number and identity of those killed.
Indeed. Ynet adds:
The Pakistani military says three of the suspects were training future suicide bombers in the Tirah Valley of Khyber region.

Oh no, Glenmore. To the Gazans, precise means hitting in the general direction of the target country. They hit Egypt and Gaza an awful lot, and occasionally Jordan as well. When they hit the Mediterranean it's because they don't want Israel to feel threatened while the latest upgrade is still under development.

Suicide car bombing kills 8 Iraqi Shiite pilgrims
[Rudaw] Iraqi authorities say a suicide boom-mobile went off next to a crowd of Shiite pilgrims near the town of Balad as they were returning from the city of Samarra, killing eight and wounding 16.

Police and a local official in Balad said on Thursday that the attack happened overnight as the pilgrims were returning from a revered Shiite shrine in Samarra.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Samarra is the burial site for two revered 9th century Shiite imams and on Wednesday, there was a ceremony marking the death of one of them.

The region north of Baghdad is predominantly Sunni and last year much of it was seized in a blitz by the bully boy Islamic State

Slow Reconquista continues: ISIS mines and snipers slow Iraqi assault on Ramadi
[Rudaw] Iraqi forces are engaged in heavy fighting in Ramadi, with some parts of the city recaptured and other advances stalled by ISIS landmines and other explosives, a top commander told the press on Thursday.

"Security forces in coordination with the Iraqi Army and Iraqi anti-terror forces have managed to recapture parts of the district of Sofaiya in southern Ramadi, but ISIS booby traps and landmines have prevented our forces to launch a further assault," said Brigadier General Mohammad Al Khalaf.

"Dozens of ISIS snipers have deployed in houses and buildings in Sofiya and they have planted explosives, but our forces will not stop and soon we will clear Ramadi's districts of Hoz and Warar," he added.

Farhan Mohamad, member of the Anbar provincial council, told several news agencies ISIS Lions of Islam used chemical weapons in some areas of Anbar province resulting in the deaths of "several civilians."

Israel Court Jails Belgian for Spying for Iran
[AnNahar] An Israeli court sentenced an Iranian-born Belgian to seven years in prison Tuesday after convicting him of spying for Tehran posing as a businessman.

Ali Mansouri was jugged
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
at Ben Gurion airport in 2013 as he attempted to leave the country carrying photographs of the U.S. embassy in Tel Aviv and other sites, Israel's Shin Bet domestic security service said.

He was sentenced for "aiding an enemy during war" and "espionage" on behalf of Iran's elite Republican Guard, court documents showed.

Defense lawyer Avidgor Feldman said he did not expect to appeal.

"The court heard our arguments that the security of Israel was not compromised," Feldman told news hounds after the hearing in the central city of Lod.

"It was the Iranian secret services who put pressure on him and his family, and we feel that this verdict was rather fair and reasonable in view of the circumstances."

Two armed guards led the handcuffed Mansouri into the dock, separated from the mostly empty court room by a glass screen, an AFP correspondent said.

The bespectacled 56-year-old looked bemused as the sentence was handed down in Hebrew.

His lawyer approached the screen to inform Mansouri of the sentence in English.

"Seven years... okay?" Feldman said.

"I want to see you," Mansouri responded.

The Shin Bet claimed that Mansouri, who acquired Belgian nationality through marriage, had enrolled in a special operations unit of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards after being recruited in 2012.

According to the indictment, he was given "an espionage mission aimed at harming Israel's security," and visited the country three times.

He was to pretend to be "an innocent businessman and establish a company in Israel" that would serve as infrastructure for espionage by another Iranian man who would arrive later.

The prosecution said Mansouri confessed his ties to Iranian intelligence.

During questioning he said he had been promised $1 million (930,000 euros) as a reward to use his position to set up companies in Israel on behalf of Iranian intelligence to "harm Israeli and Western interests."

Using the alias Alex Mans, Mansouri is accused of entering Israel using his Belgian passport in July 2012, before later briefing his handlers in Iran on his progress and security at Ben Gurion airport.

In January 2013 Mansouri again entered Israel, and took photographs of the U.S. embassy in Tel Aviv and an unnamed security installation before another debriefing in Iran.

Mansouri arrived again on September 6 for meetings to open a factory and, according to the indictment, "serve Iranian intelligence in the future."

He was arrested at the airport on September 11, 2013, as he sought to leave Israel.

group jihadists, have been killed in Syria by a U.S.-led air campaign in the past seven months, a monitoring group said Thursday.

"At least 1,922 fighters from IS, mostly foreigners, have been killed since September 23, 2014 in raids and aerial attacks by the international coalition on IS positions and oil refineries" throughout Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The strikes targeted IS positions in the central province of Homs, as well as Aleppo in the north, Hasakeh in the northeast, and Deir Ezzor to the east.

They also struck the northern province of Raqa, where the picturesque provincial capital of the same name has become the centre of IS's self-styled "caliphate".

The toll also included 90 fighters from IS's jihadist rival and al-Qaeda Syrian affiliate Al-Nusra Front, most of whom were killed in coalition strikes on their strongholds in northern Syria. It also included one Islamist rebel who was being held by IS.

At least 66 civilians, including 10 children, have been killed in the campaign, the Britannia-based Observatory said.

The coalition air strikes have provided significant support to Kurdish forces, helping them to expel IS jihadists from the flashpoint town of Kobane on the Syrian-Turkish border in January.

Rebels Launch New Offensive in Northwest Syria
[AnNahar] Several hard-line Syrian rebel groups pushed a new offensive against government forces in northwestern Syria on Thursday, less than a month after seizing control of the placid provincial capital there.

The conservative Islamic factions, including the al-Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front, are coordinating a multi-pronged campaign whose main target appears to be the town of Jisr al-Shughour in Idlib province. Opposition fighters are also attacking government checkpoints in a sprawling agricultural plain south of the town as well as nearby military facilities.

The operation keeps the pressure on beleaguered government forces in the area just weeks after the rebels captured Idlib city, the placid provincial capital. Forces loyal to Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

maintain control of Jisr al-Shughour as well as towns and military facilities in the province, but their hold looks increasingly shaky.

The opposition groups taking part in the new operation posted a statement online late Wednesday announcing the start of the offensive, which they call "Battle of Victory."

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Thursday the rebels have taken five checkpoints since the offensive began, including two near Jisr al-Shugour. Observatory director Rami Abdurrahman said heavy fighting raged outside of the town as well as in the Sahel al-Ghab plain to the south.

A Twitter account tied to the Nusra Front in the area posted videos online showing what it said were fighters firing heavy machine guns at government forces during the festivities.
