Northam calls for Jefferson Davis arch on Fort Monroe to come down
[DAILYPRESS] Gov. Ralph Coonman Northam
Governor of Virginia, another Dem Great White Hope. He won election by calling his Publican opponent Ed Gillespie a racist, but then, don't they all?...
has called for the removal of the Jefferson Davis Memorial arch at Fort Monroe, saying its continued presence has an "adverse effect" on the historic property and urged the authority’s board of trustees to initiate steps to take it down.
Somehow, I think there's never gonna be a Ralph Northam gate anywhere.
In a letter presented Thursday to the Fort Monroe Authority Board of Trustees, Chief of Staff Clark Mercer relayed the governor’s stance, asking an eight-member panel and those ex-officio members present to take necessary steps to remove the arch and all references to the Jefferson Davis Memorial Park, located at Bernard and Ruckman road intersection near a 500-yard terreplein.

The archway entrance to the Jefferson Davis Memorial Park was built on the ramparts in 1956 by the Army on behalf of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The group paid $10,000 to build the 50-foot wrought iron structure.

"This process will require a detailed review ... along with significant public engagement. I believe it is appropriate," Mercer said, reading Northam’s letter. "I feel strongly that a memorial glorifying the President of the Confederacy has no place here, especially given our efforts this year to commemorate the 400th anniversary of enslaved Africans landing at Old Point Comfort.

Northam’s position, which some present called bold, argued while the arch and park are listed as contributing elements to the Fort Monroe National Historic Landmark designation, they "were constructed after the landmark’s period of historic significance ended," his letter stated.
"some"
Members of authority’s board, after some debate, voted unanimously to take steps to have the arch removed, a protracted process given the federal constraints facing the historic landmark district.

The vote took place during the second day of a two-day retreat with a tour of select spots on the 565-acre former military post that included a visit to the archway.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy conceived the original project to erect a structure in honor of Jefferson Davis, authority officials said. Davis, the former U.S. Secretary of War and president of the confederacy, was incarcerated for treason within a casemate cell, a mere walking distance from the archway and park.

#1  Jefferson Finis Davis (June 3, 1808 - December 6, 1889) was an American politician who served as the only President of the Confederate States from 1861 to 1865. As a member of the Democratic Party, he represented Mississippi in the United States Senate and the House of Representatives.

Trying to bury the sins of the party again. Maybe just a new plague emphasizing the point would be more in order.

#4  ...FT Monroe is one of my favorite places on the planet - I could literally every day of the rest of my life exploring the place. I therefore need to point out that you not only cannot see the arch from the outside of the fort, it's pretty much hidden inside the fort.

And believe me, the next thing to go will be the casemate where Davis stayed, restored to show what it was like when he was there.

When they control the history, they control the future.

New York state tax revenues plummet by $3.7 billion
Low tax Red States are no longer subsidizing the rapacious high tax Blue States
[NY Post] New York state tax revenues fell by $3.7 billion, or 4.7 percent, last year ‐ the largest collapse since the 9/11 attacks ‐ but officials downplayed the significance.

Trying to find a bright side, state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said things could have been worse since a surge in collections last month staved off an even steeper drop.

"After months of concern over lower-than-expected tax collections, the state ended the fiscal year on a positive note," he said.

"The sharp revenue declines in December and January, however, remind us to take nothing for granted. With expectations of a slowing economy and ongoing concerns regarding federal fiscal policies, a strong commitment to building robust reserves in preparation for the next economic slump is essential."

The primarily culprit was a 6.6 percent decrease in personal income tax revenues, which came in at $48.1 billion ‐ $3.4 billion less than the previous year.

DiNapoli spokesman Brian Butry cited sweeping changes to the federal tax code, including a new $10,000 cap on state and local taxes that could be claimed on federal returns.

#2  NY State Dept. of Taxation and Finance, in my admittedly limited contacts and experience with them, are even bigger assholes than the Mass. Department of Revenue (and probably CA's Franchise Tax Board), and that's saying something.

One of the ways they are going to respond to this 'loss of revenue' is to go after a number of high-profile (and not-so-high profile) former residents and do a residency audit, demanding damn near every conceivable piece of evidence to prove you've moved out of state. Rush Limbaugh's brought this up enough times over the years that those of you who've heard him talk about this know that a lot more of these audits are already in the works.

Forget the fact that such harassment brownshirt thug goon tactics won't bring in jack shit for revenue; this is how the government hackerama operates.

#3  The blue states on the west coast are going to be with us for a while, but the blue states on the east coast are not going to be able to solve their massive outdated infrastructure problems within the constraints of their shrinking tax bases. A smart state legislature (N or S Dakota, Wyoming, TX) could craft some laws to steal the financial industry from NYC and the corporate registries from Delaware and the east coast is comple toast.
Posted by: M. Murcek || 04/20/2019 7:38 Comments || Top||

#4  That will be fine MM as long as those state legislatures don't wind up importing millions of Blue State voters and their ideas.
Posted by: AlanC || 04/20/2019 8:13 Comments || Top||

#5  My thoughts on #4: Yes, some (most, many, not so many?) financial sector workers want certain cultural amenities and may equate liberal voting habits with the availability of those things. The corporate registry stuff is 99% filed paperwork and 1% competent courts. Amenities don't mean much at all. I'd imagine most corporate laweyrs would not object to travelling to Cheyenne if a trip to Jackson Hole was in the itinerary. Aditionally no reason the Wyoming legislature couldn't just make Teton County the court of resort for corporate registry matters. As for the financial industry, they need access to "the cable" for HFT, which of course could be done via satellite rather than transoceanic circuit. At the end of the day, the real shakers and movers simply do not go to hipster bars in any event...

#11  I think the state of Texas should start taxing the residents of NY and CA for stupidity. If you make more than 100,000, then you pay 99% of all your money to Texas. Anyone refusing will be dragged behind a horse from their state to TX. If they live, then they'll hang em. After all, fair is fair, they annoy us, they need to pay for it.

Huckabee blasts Romney: 'Makes me sick' that you could have been president
[The Hill] Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) blasted Sen. Mitt Romney on Friday after the Utah Republican said he was "sickened" by President Trump's actions in the Mueller report.

"Know what makes me sick, Mitt? Not how disingenuous you were to take @realDonaldTrump $$ and then 4 yrs later jealously trash him & then love him again when you begged to be Sec of State, but makes me sick that you got GOP nomination and could have been @POTUS," Huckabee tweeted.

Romney was the Republican Party's presidential nominee in 2012 when former President Obama won reelection. Huckabee ran against Romney for the GOP nomination in 2008 and then unsuccessfully for the nomination again in 2016.

Huckabee, an ally of Trump who is also the father of White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, pushed back hours after the Utah senator blasted the "dishonesty and misdirection" described in special counsel Robert Mueller's report.

"I am sickened at the extent and pervasiveness of dishonesty and misdirection by individuals in the highest office of the land, including the President," Romney said in a statement posted to Twitter.

#8  I went to a Romney rally once. He talked a good game. I voted for him. He turned out to be a great disappointment. POTUS choices sucked that year, Romney (and Ryan) vs. Obama (and Biden). A choice of the evil between two lessers. I (and others) would have been better off to vote for my dog. The Party choices are rigged to favor the Deep State status quo. Romney should shut his pie hole for awhile and support the President. We don't need another Flake or McCain or some other Trump-hating Rino--they might as well be a Dem.

Gillibrand Teams Up With Former Soviet Propaganda Outfit
[Free Beacon] 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Kirsten Gillibrand is set to sign on to a policy proposal penned in part by a Marxist think tank best known for serving as a de facto Soviet mouthpiece during the Cold War.

BuzzFeed reported Tuesday that the New York senator will endorse a new report recommending steps to reduce the racial wealth divide, including policies such as a commission to study slavery reparations.

"A draft of the report, titled ’Ten Solutions to Bridge the Racial Wealth Divide,' will be jointly released this week by the Institute for Policy Studies, the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity, and the National Community Reinvestment Coalition," they report. Gillibrand told BuzzFeed News that she was "proud" to support the document.

One of the organizations Gillibrand is "proud" to partner with, the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS), was infamous during the Cold War for its defense of Communist governments and for its kneejerk support of the Soviet line.

Emory Professor and preeminent historian of American Communism Harvey Klehr dedicated an entire chapter of his book "Far Left of Center" to the IPS, which he characterized as "an intellectual nerve center for the radical movement, providing sustenance and support for a variety of causes, ranging from nuclear and anti-intervention issues to support for Marxist insurgencies."

"IPS fellows have consistently maintained that the Soviet threat is largely non-existent and a product of the military-industrial complex," he wrote. Klehr detailed how IPS fellows' partnered with Soviet-funded "peace" organizations, defended USSR and Vietnam from charges of human rights abuses, defended the Sandinistas and other Latin-American terrorists, and denied the existence of the Cambodian genocide, even as two million people died.

Elizabeth Warren Calls for House to Begin Impeachment of Trump
Go for it, Tonta. You won’t drive him out of office, and you’ll guarantee his reelection as well as the Democratic Party losing the House.
[Bloomberg] Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren on Friday called for President Donald Trump’s impeachment, saying the country can’t afford to ignore the obstruction uncovered by Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

"The severity of this misconduct demands that elected officials in both parties set aside political considerations and do their constitutional duty," the Massachusetts senator wrote in a series of tweets. "That means the House should initiate impeachment proceedings against the president of the United States."

Mueller’s report released Thursday identified at least 10 instances of potential obstruction of justice by the president, including discouraging others from cooperating with the Russia probe and dangling possible pardons.

Warren’s impeachment calls comes as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her top lieutenants have been trying to tamp down calls from progressive lawmakers in that chamber and others to begin impeachment proceedings.

Up until now, Mueller’s investigation has caused barely a ripple on the presidential campaign trail. Voters rarely mention it in questions to the candidates, and the contenders themselves have focused more on pocketbook issues like wages and health insurance.
