Africa Horn
Kenya detains 52 over suspected Islamist attack
Police detained 52 people on Friday in Kenya’s main port city, a day after an officer was killed in a suspected Islamist revenge attack, heightening tensions in an area where the authorities say militant Islamist is spreading.

After a recent spate of attacks, police detained dozens of youths from mosques in Mombasa which they say are used by radical preachers as recruitment centers. The arrests have angered many Muslims in the mainly Christian nation.
Lookout, they're going to seethe!!
A senior officer with Kenya’s counter-terrorism police unit was shot dead by gunmen on Thursday in Mombasa, in what police said could be revenge for the crackdown, prompting a new round of arrests that diplomats say will likely fuel more violence.
Kenya might have to do something the rest of the world would really, really dislike: deport all the Muslims to Somalia.
Geoffrey Mayek, Mombasa county police chief, told Reuters that police had made the 52 arrests to try to track down the killers, who are believed to have taken the rifle of the slain police officer — Ibrahim Mohammed.

“We must get the killers and also recover the stolen gun,” he said. “This operation will go on until we achieve that. In the meantime we are gathering crucial information from those we arrested. Those we find innocent among them will be released.”

Somali Islamist group Al Shabaab has claimed most of the recent attacks along the coast and elsewhere, saying it is punishing Kenya for sending troops to Somalia as part of an African Union force battling the rebels.

Diplomats acknowledge that Kenya faces a difficult task in dealing with radical youths but say the regular round-ups in which dozens are often detained at a time, with almost all released without charge, is playing into the hands of militants.

Roadside bomb hits AU vehicle in Marca town
At least 2 people were reported to have died on Monday in a huge roadside bomb that targeted a convoy carrying with African Union peacekeeping forces in the Somalia’s coastal town of Marca, according to residents.

A witness told Shabelle Media in Mogadishu by phone that remotely detonated landmine hit an armored personal carrier with AMISOM forces in the town of Marca, adding that it caused the death of 2 civilians.

The 2 innocent civilians died near the bomb site after soldiers from AMISOM opened fire on civilians who were nearby the exploded area indiscriminately, he told Shabelle Media Network based in Mogadishu.
I can imagine that the soldiers weren't too happy about being bombed, and AMISOM troops aren't exactly famous for their discipline...
The AU forces cordoned off the roads leading in and out of the town and launched security operation to ensure the stability in the town after the bomb though no one was arrested over the incident during the operation. The situation is calm and things returned to normal hours after the AMISOM forces left from the area and opened all the roads they closed for security reasons.

Marca, a town locates approximately 109 km (68 miles) to the southwest Mogadishu is not quite under control of Somalia National Army, along with AU troops serving under AMISOM banner.

Nigeria Troops Battle Boko Haram near Bauchi
[AnNahar] Nigerian troops battled scores of Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
fighters outside the northeastern city of Bauchi on Sunday, residents and a military source told AFP.

Soldiers supported by two fighter jets intercepted the bandidos gunnies who were in 20 pick-up trucks at Dungulbe village, seven kilometers (four miles) from the city, and engaged them in fierce fighting.

"The fighter jets are pounding the enemy position while ground troops are engaging them," said a military officer in the city, who asked not to be identified, in an account supported by residents.

"The operation is still ongoing but the Lions of Islam have suffered serious losses and are in disarray," the officer added.

The fighting was taking place as Nigeria was holding a second day of voting in its general election after technology failures hampered polling on Saturday.

The Islamists arrived in the village around 10:00 am (0900 GMT) and set up camp in preparation for an invasion of the city, said Dungulbe resident Mudassir Hambali, who fled to Bauchi.

"They came in 20 vehicles carrying heavy weapons. As soon as I realized what was happening I fled through the bus with my family.

"I saw a large convoy of soldiers heading towards the village while I and my family were trekking to Bauchi."

Anas Uballe, from Inkil village, two kilometers from Dungulbe, said: "I saw two military jets dropping bombs and the huge kabooms terrified our village which forced us to move into the city."

The bandidos gunnies were believed to have come through the town of Alkaleri, 60 kilometers away, where there was a dawn raid on Saturday, according to the military source and residents who fled.

Gunmen in several vehicles attacked public buildings and security checkpoints.

A cop shoppe, the office of the paramilitary Nigeria Security and Civil Defense force and the local electoral commission premises were all burned to the ground.

"They moved to Bishi, 35 kilometers away, where they rubbed out a man in his car on the highway," said Alkaleri resident Babale Shehu.

"They were no doubt the same gunnies that went to Dungulbe."

The gunnies also on Sunday attacked polling stations and destroyed ballot boxes in Bauchi, state police front man Haruna Mohammed said.

"Today... at about 0025 hours, unspecified numbers of unknown gunnies in a convoy of over 10 vehicles stormed many polling units in Kirfi... and destroyed many electoral materials," he said.

"(The) hoodlums further attacked Kirfi and Alkaleri Divisional Police Headquarters but were repelled and pursued towards Dindima town."

The police statement did not mention Boko Haram or the operation in Dungulbe, which comes after at least seven people were killed in suspected Boko Haram attacks in neighboring Gombe state Saturday.

"The entire surroundings has been cordoned off by combined security forces and effort is being intensified to restore normality in the area," said Haruna.

Arabia
Arab coalition warplanes killed 27 civilians in Sanaa
[AA.TR] Twenty-seven non-combatants were killed, including 15 children, and over ten others were maimed from Arclight airstrikes carried out Thursday by a Saudi-led military coalition on a northern residential district in Sanaa, a Yemeni NGO has said.

"At least 27 civilians -- including 15 children -- were killed and over ten others were maimed in an aerial raid by the Saudi-led military coalition that hit a residential complex housing eight families in northern Sanaa," Mwatana Organization for Human Rights (MOHR) said in a statement.

"The assault conducted by the coalition forces in the early hours of Thursday targeted a residential complex located at least 2.5km from the nearest military site," MOHR claimed.

In the statement, MOHR head Radhiyyah al-Mutawakkil stressed the need to investigate the circumstances of what she described as "a horrible massacre" in al-Nour neighborhood.

al-Mutawakkil also called for not targeting civilians and urged taking necessary measures to minimize any damage that might befall Yemeni citizens.

Claims by the MOHR could not be independently verified, but the front man for the Saudi-led coalition has reiterated on several occasions that its warplanes are only targeting military sites and avoiding any area that might contain civilians.

Pro-Hadi vigilantes declare control of Yemen's Aden airport
[AA.TR] Vigilantes loyal to Yemen's embattled President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi have announced that they are in full control of Aden airport as calm prevailed in the southern city following a night of clashes.

Sources with the vigilantes told The Anadolu Agency that its elements had expanded their control over the airport following clashes in its vicinity with Houthi militants.

The violence left 10 Houthis and six vigilantes dead, according to the source.

Meanwhile, calm prevailed in the city as clashes that erupted Saturday night between pro-Hadi vigilantes and Houthis came to an end.

According to eyewitnesses, an unspecified number of Houthis were killed in an ambush by the pro-Hadi vigilantes in Dar Saad district.

Having occupied capital Sanaa and sought to extend their influence in other Yemeni provinces, the Shiite Houthi group pitted itself against Sunni tribes and loyalists of the embattled president who has left for Saudi Arabia.

Several Arab states have joined a Saudi-led offensive which kicked off late Wednesday with a string of airstrikes against the positions of the Houthi group in Yemen, including some in capital Sanaa.

Saudi Arabia said the strikes were in response to calls by Hadi for military intervention to "save the people from the Houthi militias."

Arab Air Strikes Cripple Yemen's Main Airport OR The Rubble-ization of Yemen Continues
[AnNahar] Saudi-led warplanes bombed Yemen's main international airport and struck a renegade troop base in the capital, as Arab leaders vowed Sunday to pummel Iranian-backed rebels until they surrender.

The raids on the country's main air gateway came just hours after U.N. workers were evacuated following deadly fighting that has sent tensions between Tehran and other Middle East powers soaring.

Yemen's President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi has urged his Arab allies to keep up the bombing until the Huthi Iranian catspaws are defeated, branding them Iran's "puppet".

Arab League
...an organization of Arabic-speaking states with 22 member countries and four observers. The League tries to achieve Arab consensus on issues, which usually leaves them doing nothing but a bit of grimacing and mustache cursing...
chief Nabil al-Arabi said at a regional summit in Egypt on Sunday the offensive would go on until the rebels "surrender" their weapons and withdraw from areas they seized.

The Huthis and allied renegade military units have overrun much of the country and prompted Hadi to flee what had been his last remaining refuge in the main southern city Aden for Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
Dozens of people have been killed in festivities in Aden in recent days, dimming prospects of Hadi returning anytime soon.

In the capital, witnesses reported hearing three loud kabooms and seeing a large fire when Sanaa International Airport was bombed during a fourth night of Saudi-led raids.

"This was the first time they hit the runway" since the campaign began, an aviation source said. "The airport is completely out of service."

More than 200 staff from the U.N., foreign embassies and other organizations had been flown out from the airport on Saturday.

Pakistain said it was preparing to evacuate its citizens and diplomatic staff from Hudaida in western Yemen.

Overnight air strikes hit the headquarters of the rebel elite republican guard at Al-Subaha base in Sanaa, killing 15 soldiers, a military official said.

The Huthis are backed by army units loyal to former president President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
, who stepped down in 2012 after a year-long popular uprising and is accused of supporting the rebels.

The latest Saudi-led strikes also targeted an airbase in rebel-held Hudaida, witnesses said.

Other raids targeted a base of the First Artillery Brigade in Saada, the northern stronghold of the Huthis.

At the regional summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi said Arab leaders had "agreed on the principle" of creating a joint military force.

The proposal has taken on added urgency since the Huthis seized swathes of Yemen, although Saudi Arabia has said there are no immediate plans to send in ground troops.

The Sunni Arab coalition is said to have been spurred into action by the prospect of an Iranian-backed regime seizing power in impoverished Yemen, wedged on the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula.

The fighting has cast a shadow over crunch talks between world powers and Iran aimed at ensuring Tehran never develops an atomic bomb.

Russia's chief negotiator in the nuclear talks said Moscow hoped the Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
conflict would not jeopardise the negotiations between Iran and world powers under way in Switzerland
...home of the Helvetians, famous for cheese, watches, yodeling, and William Tell...
.

"Unfortunately, we are seeing that the tragedy that is happening in this country (Yemen) is having an impact on the atmosphere of the negotiations," said deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov.

According to Saudi Arabia, more than 10 countries have joined the coalition defending Hadi. Washington and Britannia have pledged logistical support.

Hadi had gone into hiding earlier in the week as rebels advanced on Aden and a warplane attacked the presidential palace there.

He surfaced in Riyadh Thursday before heading to the Egypt summit.

Late Saturday, anti-Huthi local fighters were reported to have taken full control of Aden airport with the loss of five men, and nine killed on the rebel side.

The rebels also set up a base in Dar Saad on the city's northern fringe after festivities in which six people, including four Huthis, were killed, a military source said.

Nearly 100 people are reported to have died in violence raging in Aden in recent days.

Gulf diplomats said the bombing could last up to six months, and accused Iran of providing "logistical and military support" to the rebels.

They said Riyadh and its allies had decided to intervene after satellite imagery in late January showed the movement of Scud missiles north towards the Saudi border, with the capacity to strike a large part of the kingdom's territory.

A coalition front man told news hounds Saturday that "most" of the Huthis' missile capabilities were believed to have been destroyed in the air strikes.

Arab operation hit Yemen base holding long-range missiles
A Saudi-led military operation has targeted a base where Iranian-backed Houthi fighters had set up long-range missiles and pointed them towards the southern Yemeni city of Aden and neighboring countries, a Yemeni official said on Saturday. The official told Reuters that Yemeni authorities had received information that Iranian experts had brought in parts for the missiles at the base, located south of Sanaa.

Iran denies allegations made by some Yemeni and Western officials that it is providing money and training to the Shi'ite Muslim Houthis, whose rapid territorial advances triggered an Arab military campaign against them.

The official, a member of the Yemeni delegation at an Arab League summit in Egypt, showed Reuters mobile phone pictures of a huge orange mushroom cloud, saying it was the force of the rockets exploding at the base after it was targeted. He did not specify which countries the rockets were directed at.

Houthi fighters seeking to overthrow the Western- and Saudi-backed Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi have continued to make gains since the Saudi-led coalition launched air strikes against them on Thursday.

"It's not in our interest to directly confront them army-to-army because they (Houthis) have heavy weapons," said the official. "It is in our interest for them to enter and becoming a constant, sitting target and then we can pick them off."

One Dead, Two Injured in Shooting at Gate of NSA HQ
[WASHINGTON.CBSLOCAL] One person is dead and two are injured after an incident at the gate of National Security Agency headquarters in Maryland Monday morning, Fort Meade officials say.
Fox News sez they were dressed up like girls
So does the Chicago Tribune on an AP feed.
A senior U.S. official says preliminary reports from the scene indicate that one person is dead after a car with two people inside tried to ram a gate at the base.
After the gate was rammed, a guard reportedly got into an argument with the men and gunfire erupted.
The official says a firefight ensued after the car tried to crash the gate, and at least one of the two people in the car is dead.
The National Security Agency is handling the investigation with assistance from the FBI. The incident happened around 9:30 a.m. local time.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss an ongoing incident.
If they were dressed up like girls, I'm thinking either Moslem or a false report. The fact that it's the Llewellen Avenue gate makes me think dumbassery. The hospital medical center is a block away. NSA's on the other side of the post, by the Route 32 exit. The gate itself is closed most of the time and it's festively decorated with concrete barricades.
A Ft. Meade employee tells WNEW that an announcement was made to employees that the incident was cleared, but the gate remains closed.
Channel 4 sez "At least one gun and drugs were found in the stolen Ford Escape the men were riding in, according to NBC News."
Ft. Meade Spokesman Chad Jones says emergency responders were on the scene and treating the two injured individuals.
The NBC New article has a picture of the guard on the stretcher.
Sources confirmed to CBS News that after the vehicle tried to run through the gate, guards responded by shooting at the vehicle and at least one individual was shot.
Apparently the guard. I'm not even sure they're armed, though if not they're probably close at hand.
A federal law enforcement official told CBS News that cocaine and a weapon were found in or near the vehicle.
"A senior U.S. official told NBC News that the incident appears to be a "local criminal matter"; so far, no federal agencies, including the FBI, are involved in the investigation."
There is no indication that the incident was terrorism-related.
If they got that from a "senior U.S. official" chances run 50:50 that it's true.
The FBI is also investigating the shooting.
If it's criminal the likely origin is Pioneer City, a development adjacent, where a hefty part of the crime in the county originates.
"We are investigating with NSA Police and other law enforcement agencies," a spokesperson for FBI Baltimore says.
Time has the headline "1 Dead in Shooting Outside NSA Headquarters"
"Our Evidence Response Team is processing the crime scene, and FBI Agents are doing joint interviews with witnesses. We are working with the US Attorney's Office in Maryland to determine if federal charges are warranted.
Yahoo adds: "The guy who went to Shock Trauma is "severely injured” and is not likely to survive." I'm thinkin' doll rags.

US-led Coalition bombarded ISIL with 17 new airstrikes in Tikrit
Herewith follows the longest article yet published by Iraqi News:
[IraqiNews.com] US-led warplanes continued to hammer ISIS positions around the pivotal Iraqi battleground city of Tikrit, stepping in at the Iraqi Prime Minister's request to get at what a front man called "difficult targets."

The U.S. military announced Thursday that it and its allies conducted 17 Arclight airstrikes around Tikrit, going after three ISIS checkpoints, two bridges, two staging areas and other targets such as a roadblock and a "command and control facility."

The idea is that this aerial bombardment will pave the way for Iraqi forces to go in and take control on the ground.

"The ongoing Iraqi and coalition Arclight airstrikes are setting the conditions for offensive action," said Lt. Gen. James L. Terry, commanding general of the U.S.-led coalition.

Iraqi forces have tried multiple times to win back Tikrit since the group, which calls itself the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
, conquered the city in June as part of its campaign to amass an expansive Islamic caliphate. And each time, so far, they've failed.

The latest push began after Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi on March 1 ordered Iraqi forces to retake Tikrit and Salahuddin province. Militants have been under pressure ever since in the battleground city, which is the birthplace of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and located about 160 kilometers (100 miles) north of Baghdad.

ISIS responded by adjusting its positions in and around the city, hiding in buildings and other key infrastructure, said Saad al-Hadithi, a front man for al-Abadi. This movement led Iraq's military to pause its operation, out of growing worries that a full-on invasion could produce heavy Iraqi military and some civilian casualties.

The situation also spurred the Iraqi Prime Minister to request more help.

Al-Hadithi said the U.S.-led coalition has "advanced technical" and "powerful" capabilities -- not to mention the right munitions -- that Iraq's air force does not have to conduct precision Arclight airstrikes.

Thus, it was al-Abadi who specifically asked for the strikes, based on what he heard from military commanders on the ground.

If so, the decision would appear to be at odds with what was said just a few weeks ago by some leaders of the predominantly Shiite Moslem forces doing much of the fighting around Tikrit. Some of these Shiite fighters are getting help from the Iranian government, a longstanding and staunch U.S. foe.

"We don't need it, and we won't need it,"Hadi Al-Amari, the head of the Hashd Al-Shaabi fighting force, saidin mid-March. "Anyone who puts their faith in the international coalition to liberate Iraq is putting their faith on a mirage."

Thus, al-Abadi is taking a bit of a gamble by having the U.S.-led coalition play any part in this fight. He hopes it pays off by not only ousting ISIS from Tikrit, but setting the stage for Iraqi forces to take back an even bigger prize: djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
"There is high morale to liberate this city from ISIS and the terrorists. I would like to assure all the citizens that there are almost no civilians remaining in the city now, and there are only terrorists," al-Abadi said Thursday during a visit to Tikrit.

Top Kurdish ISIS leader killed in Mosul
[RUDAW.NET] The top Kurdish ISIS leader, reportedly responsible for the death of dozens of Kurdish civilians, was killed in coalition air strikes in djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) said Sunday.

"Ziad Salim Mohammad Ali al-Kurdi, the top ethnically Kurdish ISIS leader, has been killed by US-led coalition Arclight airstrikes last night in Mosul," the KRG's National Security Council said in a statement.

It said that al-Kurdi, who was "also known as Mansur, had joined the al-Qaeda terrorist group in 2004," and was tossed in the clink

by coalition forces in 2006.

It added that al-Kurdi was later affiliated with ISIS and "had been in charge of several military operations," including assaults on the Kurdish towns of Gwer and Makhmur, some 80 kilometers south of Erbil.

"Dozens of Kurdish civilians and Iraqi people have been murdered by al-Kurdi", the statement said.

Coalition Arclight airstrikes have been bombarding ISIS arsenals and positions in Syria and Iraq ahead of an impending attack on Mosul, which was captured by ISIS in June.

Meanwhile,

an official from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) from Mosul told Rudaw Sunday that ISIS had executed 20 of its hard boyz in Iraq who were trying to escape from the frontline and flee to Syria.

"The fighters were trying to escape from a battle near Mosul on Saturday," he said.

"All the hard boyz were reportedly from Iraq and were killed by ISIS imported muscle," he added.

Coalition Arclight airstrikes on ISIS bases and troops near Mosul on Saturday reportedly led to the deaths of several ISIS murderous Moslems.

No Holy Week break for Philippine terrorists
There will be no letup in security operations against all "enemies of the state," particularly the Abu Sayyaf and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters as the Philippines observes Holy Week.

Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma yesterday said that both the Philippine military and the national police had been directed to secure the peace between Palm Sunday until Easter Sunday. He said, "The AFP and PNP, and even the Philippine Coast Guard, are working together in collaboration with local government units in keeping the peace during Holy Week."

AFP Chief of Staff General Gregorio Pio Catapang earlier ordered troops to press the campaign against the Abu Sayyaf and the BIFF. He directed military field commanders in Sulu and Maguindanao to pursue the two groups with no letup, but to avoid collateral damage involving civilians.

ISIL has so far released several similar videos showing the execution of its captives from different countries, including the United States, Britannia, and Japan. On March 19, the Takfiri group released a video showing the beheading of three Iraqi Kurdish Peshmerga fighters.

Syrian troops reposition in Idlib suburbs after city falls
[Iran Press TV] Syrian military forces have regrouped in the suburbs of the northwestern city of Idlib a day after the city fell into the hands of al-Qaeda-linked terrorists.

"Forces are repositioning on the outskirts of Idlib in order to face the terrorist battalions... and be in the best position to repel their attack," a security source in the Syrian capital city of Damascus told AFP on Sunday.

The troops carried out a "successful operation regrouping south of the city," Syria's al-Watan newspaper reported.

"Army reinforcements were sent to start a military operation to regain control of the areas that were vacated after the evacuation of the local population to safe areas," the daily quoted a source on the ground as saying.

On Saturday, a coalition of terrorist groups, which calls itself the Army of Conquest and includes the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra

Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014...
as well as other smaller groups, seized control of the city following days of heavy festivities with government forces.

Earlier this month, Damascus said thousands of bandidos hard boyz streamed in from The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

to attack Idlib. At least 170 people have been killed on both sides since Tuesday.

Idlib has been the epicenter of deadly fighting between government troops and turbans for months. It is located near the strategically significant main highway that links Damascus to the key northern city of Aleppo.

40 returning Kobane residents killed by mines and booby traps since liberation
[RUDAW.NET] An estimated 40 people have been killed by mines and booby traps in Kobane in the two months since Kurdish forces evicted ISIS from the city in Syria's Kurdish region (Rojava), a local official told Rudaw.

"Since the day we started to clean up Kobane and nearby areas at least 40 people have been killed and dozens maimed by ISIS mines," Nasan Ahmed, health minister of the Kobane canton, said Saturday.

He appealed for immediate international help to clean up Kobane from the huge numbers of mines and booby traps planted by ISIS on roads as well as in abandoned schools and homes.

Much of Kobane was turned to rubble since ISIS escalated an offensive in September against the city. Residents fled in huge numbers, mostly to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

and the Kurdistan Region, as Kurdish forces stood up to an ISIS siege that ended after months of fighting that included near-daily air raids by coalition forces. Kurdish forces declared the city liberated on January 26.

Authorities in Kobane had warned residents not to return until the city had been cleared of ordnance, but many former residents have been ignoring that advice and returning in large numbers.

Mustafa Anifi, a member of Kurdish National Council (KNC) in Syria, has warned returnees to stay away from dead ISIS bodies because many are booby trapped.

"Don't touch dead ISIS bodies, most of them are booby trapped and it is the responsibility of the authorities to take care of the matter, not civilians," he said.

Since liberation, efforts have been ongoing by Kurds to rebuild Kobane, which had a pre-war population of some 200,000 residents.

The city has become a symbol of Kurdish resistance, after a combined force of the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) and some 150 Peshmerga troops -- backed by coalition air power -- forced ISIS to retreat and abandon efforts of capturing the city.

#1  Require at least one member of each returning family to take basic training in bomb recognition and removal, and another to get basic training in first aid -- specifically tourniquets and wound management. And those who show a talent in either ought to be encouraged to get more seriou training... then hire them to aid the Kurdish efforts.

US allies strike 14 targets in Iraq, one in Syria
[Ynet] Members of the US-led coalition struck targets in Iraq and Syria overnight as part of the fight against Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
Lion of Islams, according to a blurb from the combined joint task force.

The attacks struck 14 targets in Iraq and one in Syria, including positions held by Lions of Islam near the cities of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, Tikrit and Fallujah.
